Does the news depress you?

I got chickenpox last year when I was 20, very badly. It got me very down and it appears I got chronic fatigue syndrome with it, and that combined with a BC pill that didn't suit me made me terribly emotional and depressive.

Anyhoo, since then, I've found I can't watch/read the news! Like, if I do, I start worrying and feeling down. Hence, this whole Jade Goody thing is getting on my tits because I hate being reminded of my own mortality.

Does anyone else ever get like this? Or am I just totally weird? ;D

Cruelty against animals really bums be out.
Here in Aus, some jerks think its funny to shoot arrows at Kangaroos or to beat them up at night or decapitate them. Makes me sick and very sad.

Mind you I kick my dogs when they give me the shits.... so maybe I'm just as messed up

lol
No over here "gives me the shits" means "it annoys me".

Um... I guess if you want to get technical it could be an alergic reaction in my stomach due to their hairs?
I dunno, Im no doctor. Google it.

lmao that is so funny how one place something means one thing and another place something can mean an entirely different thing. its not nice for u to kick ur dogs when they annoy u but this "give me the shits" thing made me laugh.

I think we all "kick the dog" once in awhile, and we all know it's awful and bad.

The funny thing is that if you do it once or twice, and you truly didn't mean it, dogs (and cats) are often quite forgiving. It's a shame people don't posses this trait (forgiveness over a one time thing).

However, when my Pit/Boxer mixx decides to start shit with the other two dogs in the house (picking a fight with one dog gets all of them involved), I have absolutely no problem grabbing him by the throat and slamming him up against the wall. Only had to do it once, and that dog does not disobey a single word I utter.

He doesn't listen to my mother and sister though, and I'm going home over spring break to give them a lesson on how to control our three dogs, because they keep getting into fights (because of the Pitt/Boxer getting very jealous). I'd rather not have to give up or lose any of my dogs, and if my mother and sister were just assertive with the dogs instead of spoiling one or two, we wouldn't have any of these problems at all.

The news is depressing in general... especially whe it involves animals, children and any kind of loss of life.
The whole Jade Goody thing is just being sensationalised coz she wants money for her boys. I find it hard to feel sorry for her because she wants this spotlight.

I feel exactly the same way, and whenever I state it I get shot down!!
I just kinda wish she'd have a little bit more dignity.

I feel sort of uncomfortable that her death is being played out in the media. But at the same time I can absolutely understand that she wants to make as much money as possible to leave to her two boys. I think she's actually very in control of the situation. And for the first time EVER a thing a tiny piece of me actualy admires her for it. Because she's doing it for her children. I read a quote recently where she said she wants them to go to private school "because I know I'm ignorant, but I don't want my boys to be. I want them to be well educated.". I actually think that statement shows a lot of insight and maturity. She became famous for being ignorant (who can forget "East Angular"? Lol), but she wants better for her children.

I do worry about those boys though, because I think she may be the only one who has ever looked out for them. I don't know how they'll fare with Jeff or that numpty Jack Tweed. Or, worse still, Jade's crazy mother.

Hahaha gosh yes she doesn't have the best family does she?

But yes I can understand the monetary side of it, of course. But it's a shame that she has always been so desperate to be in the limelight, even whilst she's dying. I hope her boys don't grow up to be like that.

Maybe it's BECAUSE I don't watch the news (precisely because of the depressing bit, and I don't need any more reason to be depressed than I already have), but what is this Jade Goody story?

You wouldn't have seen her on TV here, as she was on reality TV in the UK (Big Brother). I do remember hearing about her at one point because of a controversy on that show about racism.
Anyway, she has two young children, and has terminal cancer.

Yeah she has cervical cancer which has spread and she's been given 2 months tops.
She got famous for being ridiculously stupid on Big Brother... like she thought East Anglia, an English county, was a foreign country.
And the public HATED her.
Now she is dying but she's still constantly in the spotlight. The only good thing that's come of it is that apparently the amount of women going for their smears has risen.
I mean it's very very sad, as she is only 27, and has two young boys. BUT I don't need to hear about her every day.

Well East Anglia is not a county as Wikipedia informed me, it's a collection of counties next to London.

NO NO - SHE THOUGHT IT WAS EAST ANGULAR!

I ACTUALLY SUSPECT THAT HER STUPIDITY ON BB WAS PARTLY AN ACT, FOR ATTENTION. A SUBTLE WAY TO GET FAME, BY PLAYING ON AND EXAGGERATING HER LACK OF BRIGHTNESS! SHE IS QUITE SMART IN THAT SENSE - KNOWING HOW TO ATTRACT ATTENTION AND GET A LAUGH. I'D ALSO SAY THE PUBLIC NEVER REALLY HATED HER - IT WAS MORE THAT THEY LOVED TO HATE HER, WHICH IS A BIT DIFFERENT. LIKE THEY FOUND IT FUN TO MOCK HER JADE-ISMS! I TOTALLY HATED HER THOUGH, BECAUSE I WAS DOING NIGHT SHIFTS AT THE TIME, AND THE NURSE I WORKED WITH KEPT THE TELLY ON ALL NIGHT, AND GOSH, HOW AWFUL IT IS TO HEAR JADE GOODY'S ANNOYING LAUGH THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT WHEN YOU'RE REALLY TIRED, YO! I DIDN'T MIND HER ONCE SHE'D FINISHED BIG BROTHER THOUGH, AND I DIDN'T HAVE TO HEAR HER LAUGH AND SILLY VOICE THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT!

I WORK IN CARE HOMES, SO AM CONSTANTLY REMINDED OF MY OWN MORTALITY. JADE GOODY IS JUST ONE WOMAN OF MANY WHO DIE YOUNG - SHE'S JUST IN THE NEWS BECAUSE OF HER FAME. SO I DON'T REALLY HAVE MUCH OF AN EMOTIONAL RESPONSE TO HER, OTHER THAN A GENERIC 'IT'S SAD THAT SOMEONE IS DYING YOUNG' THOUGHT.

I DON'T REALLY WATCH THE NEWS THOUGH. I TAKE A QUICK LOOK AT THE HEADLINES ONLINE WHEN ANYONE MENTIONS ANYTHING. AND I OCCASIONALLY WATCH 'HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU' TO SEE THE SATIRIC SIDE.

I think the reason it upsets people is because she's only 27. I've also seen a lot of death through my job, but the majority of patients who I've had die have been much much older than me. I wasn't really reminded on my own mortality until a 25 year old girl who I went to high school with found out she had cervical cancer (thankfully caught early and with a good prognosis). Now THAT scared me. I think it's similar with Jade Goody.

I GUESS. I DON'T THINK I SEE IT THAT WAY THOUGH, I GUESS BECAUSE WHEN I WAS A KID, I KNEW A COUPLE OF KIDS AT SCHOOL WHO DIED, AND THEN WHEN I WAS 16 I DID VOLUNTEER WORK WITH DISABLED KIDS, AND SOME OF THEM DIED, SO I DON'T REALLY SEE DEATH AS ONLY HAPPENING TO OLD PEOPLE. I THINK IF SOMEONE IN MY PEER GROUP NOW DIED I MIGHT FEEL A BIT FREAKED OUT, BECAUSE YOU IDENTIFY MORE WITH YOUR PEER GROUP, BUT NOT WITH JADE GOODY. SHE'S YOUNGER THAN ME ANYWAY - LIKE SHE IS NOT MY PEER GROUP. AND BESIDES, I THINK ONCE YOU GET PAST 30, YOU ARE MORE AWARE OF YOUR MORTALITY ANYWAY, YO - WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE (YOU LITTLE WHIPPERSNAPPER, YO! ;D) I TENDED TO SEE MYSELF AS MORE IMMORTAL!
