Hello fellow Bloopers,

I'm perpetrating a public art project that requires participation. It's called "Stay Off The Sidewalk Challenge."

As you walk through out your day, you must not use sidewalks to get to where you are going. You must find alternative routes that do not utilize sidewalks or other man made walkways. Explore your daily commutes in a new way and post pictures of your adventures.

Anyone interested?

I read this earlier, and have been pondering it all day. I'd love to do it, but I'm just not quite sure how I could manage it. Maybe I'm interpreting this a little too literally, but living in the middle of a city makes it extremely difficult to avoid man-made walkways. I also live far enough away from my workplace so as to make walking incredibly inconvenient. I would have to pick a suitably natural destination and make a special day of the project rather than make it part of my regular commute, which would defeat your proposed purpose. Are you open to expanding the rules a little?

The original version of this challenge is issued to college students walking around on campus. However, I wanted to open it up to more people to hopefully increase the response.

I am absolutely open to expanding the parameters. If you have a lunch break, for example, you might explore where you could walk during that time. You could utilize man made paths that weren't meant for pedestrian travel (such as stepping from wheel stop to wheel stop in a parking lot).

I'd do it but I'd have to learn how to float lol If I don't walk on the sidewalk I'll be in the middle of the road!

The great thing about this is that it doesn't add a ton of additional time to your walking commute. If you normally walk from point A to point B and use sidewalks, you still walk from Point A to Point B but without using the sidewalks.

@WingedCentaur I drive to work. I have no choice but to drive because I have a 30 minute commute. Maybe I'll try it out if I go for a walk on the weekend.

If I were to walk to work without using sidewalks, it would almost double my commute time! I've actually looked into it before - I always prefer finding alternative, scenic routes where possible - and there are some nice looking alternatives (although I wouldn't be able to avoid using sidewalks altogether), but they would take me quite a long way out of my way! Since my shortest route to work (using sidewalks all the way) is just over four miles, I'm not really very keen to extend this! Although I do sometimes take the bus, which is a nice quick way to avoid walking along sidewalks! ;D

I actually think it would be pretty much impossible to avoid man-made walkways anyway, even if I were to go through the countryside/woodlands areas. They are not untouched by man - they have their own little pathways and bridges that have been created so that people can navigate their way through!

I drive almost everywhere and where I live is very built up (even the green spaces are man-made to an extent)... short of flying to work I don't think I'd be able to avoid pavements (sidewalks). I wish I lived somewhere with more green spaces!

yeah, if my walk to work was made not on sidewalks, I would probably be killed. In the middle of a city where the drivers don't pay attention, my only option in far too much of my walk would be on the road.
