Alex (female) is just barely a year old now. Something has happened to her eye. Not the eyeball it's self but where us humans would put eyeliner is bright pink, very slightly swollen. I've been flushing it with warmish water in case there was something in it (we had a severe storm come through and though maybe the wind had blown something into her eye). She's not scratching it and will let me look at it as long as I don't touch the area.... Until my husband gets back I have no way of taking her to a Vet - anyone have any ideas? I am so worried about her.. :(

I think you're already doing the right thing, that's what I'd do for my two boys! If you're worried, why not give the vet a bell and see what they say? They will normally advise. Hope she gets better soon!

you should always call the vet and talk to someone there instead of bringing her in.

I agree with the others, at least phone a vet and see what they say. Where is the swelling at on the eyelid? How long has it been swollen? Is the dog current on all of her shots? Has she been exposed to other dogs? It could be a number of things ranging from irritation or allergies to something far more serious. I'm assuming it's not cherry eye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_eye). My initial guess would be allergies, but I'm certainly not an expert, I just work with animals.

If your dog is not current on it shots, it could be something really serious. If I remember correctly, distemper can cause eyes to swell.

no not cherry eye.. up to date on all shots (well Rabies is due again at the end of the month) - first noticed it late yesterday afternoon so about 24 hours I guess. Almost looks like there might be a stye (sp?) on the bottom eye lid. I have 2 other dogs also up to date on all shots (all due for rabies on the 28th)
dont know if this link/pic will work and its not the best view but her momma kept getting in the way when I was trying to take a picture

It looks like allergies (or an allergic reaction to getting stung by something, etc.). Some dogs get really terrible allergies so that their eyes swell practically shut. Is she still not scratching, though? I believe dogs with allergies tend to rub their face against something, like a couch, because it itches. Have you noticed any hives on her?

Has she been lethargic? Sneezed often? Thrown up bile? Be sure to keep an eye out for that because then you need to get it to a vet ASAP. This shouldn't happen since you've said she's current her shots (but that still doesn't guarantee it won't). I'm just ALWAYS super paranoid about distemper since I've seen far too many puppies have it (though yours is a bit older than the high risk pups). Is the eye producing a yellowish discharge?

I'm still leaning towards allergies, but, as I've said, I'm not expert and try to take her to the vet as soon as you can!

Even though it's gone down/away you should still call. Just in case, that way you know what to do if it happens again.
