I really hope, with everything in me, that this is a joke. Are people really this stupid? Are they really that desperate for a shot?

LOS ANGELES — Teenagers are showing up in Los Angeles emergency rooms after drinking inexpensive liquid hand sanitizers to get drunk.

Cheap and easily accessible hand sanitizers contain 62 percent ethyl alcohol.

The Los Angeles Times says six teenagers have shown up in two San Fernando Valley emergency rooms in the last few months with alcohol poisoning after drinking hand sanitizer.

Some of the teens used salt to separate the alcohol from the sanitizer, making a potent drink similar to a shot of hard liquor. Distillation instructions can be found on the Internet.

Although there's only been a few cases, county public health toxicology expert Cyrus Rangan says it could signal a dangerous trend.

Not surprising. If it's not one thing, it's another. Motor oil, lysol, windex... if you can't legally obtain or afford a drug, you'll just find some other way to feel the burn. I had friends in highschool that liked to come to my place on lunch break and snark up a bunch of my incense smoke.

My mom went to AA and there was a doctor at the meetings who would drink Windex to get herself drunk.

I just don't get it. Apparently the warning labels on said products are there just for show.

My partner used to work in a chemical dependency center in the adolescents unit -- they weren't allowed to have alcohol based hand sanitizer on the premises because the kids would consume it to try and get drunk. There are hand sanitizers out there that aren't alcohol based and that's what they use in chemical dependency centers.

If people are at the ER due to drinking windex, hand sanitizer, ect THEN there should be a law where Doctors don't have to treat them. It's such a waste of a Doctors time.

If doctors didn't have to treat people who are in ER due to an accident that happened from their own stupidity, then a huge number of people would be sent home!

What pingu said. In that case we should probably not treat people with any smoking/alcohol/diet related diseases. It might be frustrating for us to see people with self-inflicted health problems, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve help. Not to mention that most people who resort to drinking things like that are alcoholics, and it IS a disease and addiciton.

And kids drinking hand sanitiser... yes it's stupid, but most of us did the occassional stupid thing as a teenager. They don't desrve to die because of one stupid mistake!

Its a semi-"nice" sentiment espec for first responders who are constantly called to the same house over and over for accidental poisoning type things... But you also have to take into consideration that there are a lot of things that come into play when you are a teen. Peer pressure, honestly not realizing its a bad idea (your brain is not fully formed when you are a teen) and like Fraggle said - Alcoholism is an illness. And there are normally underlying illnesses such as depression that maybe not be - being managed, or even diagnosed yet.

If a diabetic teen is out with their friends, and their friends are eating a lot of (enter food of choice) , and the teen didn't bring her meter or her insulin and ends up having a diabetic emergency - should she not be treated then because she "should of known better'.

or a kid riding his bike without his helmet falls and has a huge open gash on his scalp and possible concussion - should the doctor send him home still bleeding and nu-monitored because he should of known better and had his helmet on?

What about the 2 yr old whose been told over and over the stove is HOT - no touching! And ends up burning his finger on the range top - he should of known better, his mom told him no, it's hot.. Guess the docs would have to send him and his mom home too without treatment.

Where would you draw the line on who exactly knew better, and who therefore should be treated?

Teens have always been rather creative in their search for things containing alcohol which they are not prohibited from buying! Similarly with things to sniff to make them high - Tipp-Ex was a popular one back when I was a young'un!

It's Natural Selection trying to find a way, is what it is.

But yeah, seems kids are getting dumber... no common sense or natural inclination for self preservation.

They are also the reason those towel dispenser things stopped being used, kids were choking themselves out in them to "get high" and some kid died. Poof, no more towel stations in bathrooms.

Think it's a bit harsh saying that doctors shouldn't have to treat them. I mean, I do agree, what they are doing is stupid. However, it would be really sad if a doctor said "Oh, I'm not going to treat you because you're an idiot and you did this to get drunk". I'm sure they wouldn't say to someone that got drunk and hurt themselves "I'm not going to treat you because you got drunk and you shouldn't have been drinking"

And I meant, in that last sentence, "Drinking alcohol" getting drunk. :P People do stupid things all the time but it doesn't mean they shouldn't get the treatment.
