I learned that multiple layers can add a lot, and make a page pop. Like a few pieces of paper under a picture to add a border, etc.

And try not too make too much happen on the page. I usually stick to a 3 picture per page max (depending on the size) so that it doesn't look too crowded and I can decorate it all cute. :)

thanks - do you usually type discriptions or dates - or do you write?

I do all of my stuff by hand. I like the textured look versus the print look, personally. (that and I can't have some books be hand-made, and some printed, it would drive me nuts!)

Sometimes I type up descriptions, depending on the look I'm going for. But usually I write them in so I can make sure the words match :)

Hobby. Lobby.

Get a book that has everything for your first few, it'll make it easier on you :)

Think about the story you are trying to tell. My favorite layouts are the ones that SHOW what I'm trying to say rather than fill it up with a bunch of journaling.

I like to make sure I have copies of the photos I want to use. Walmart.com is a cheap way to make copies of just the photos you want and you can scan old photos and keep the originals in photo albums. I think the best advice I can give is don't be afraid to try new things. If you have the extra photos and supplies, just go nuts and experiment. I also keep a few different types of markers around. Ultra fine point sharpies in multicolored packs are AMAZING. Also, giving your photos borders, especially if they are on top of patterned paper, will make the page look more professional (in my opinion anyway). Have fun scrapbooking!

I second what Shadowscapes said.
I tend to cut/trim some of my photos, so I usually order doubles that I put into a photo box.. in the event my kids ever want the original pictures (sans the paper and fancies) they can have them :)

I made a scrapbook for my graduation party when I graduated high school. I want to do another for my wedding soon. I like to use stickers, so I used a lot of those with the one I made. I also got a big book that had borders you could tear out and glue around your pictures however you wanted to. So many options! There's lots of great stuff out there, and you can even use some stuff you have lying around the house. I know someone who uses stamps, old decorations, etc. I also like to use the shaped scissors to cut little borders into my pictures.

I should have copied all the pictures I used for the book I did a few years ago, because now I kind of regret using originals. I did it that way because I figured they'll always be there in my book, I can just look at them then. With my wedding pictures, I have print rights to those, so I can just go wherever and have them copied off the disk I have. I'd advise making copies of your pictures just in case.

one of the best things that I did when I was first starting out was to go to a scrap-party. Craft stores and some supply companies throw them and you can get together with other scrappers and swap ideas. Check out Michaels or Creative Memories for a party near you.

Also: When thinking about supplies, the dollar store is a great resource. Just make sure the paper is acid and lignen free, that your pens and markers are archival quality and you should be good to go :)

Happy scrapping!
