I was wondering what others pay for milk these days. In California milk is over $3. The cheapest I ever seen a gallon go for here is $3.28. I'm curious what the price is for other states. Feels like everything in California is more.

Right now I can get a gallon for 2 dollars (well 1.99). It is pretty much steady between 1.99 and 2.99....even thats a lot for what I am used to...in my hometown in Wisconsin we never paid more then 1.50...but the plus side is we have a Sarah Lee factory a mile from my house so I pay 50 cents per loaf of bread...

Wow, that's cheap! The last time I paid $2+ for milk was 3-4 years ago.

I'm not sure what type of milk you are referring to (skim, 2% or whole) but here (WV) a gallon of whole milk at the cheapest price is around $3.49. Most expensive I've seen is around $4.29..

It's over $3 for a gallon here.
Looking through the ads for our Meijer store, the gallons for the Meijer brand are on sale. 2 for $5.
Normally they can run around close to $4, depending on the brand.

I pay $3AUD ($2.99USD apparently) for 2L of milk which is like...0.5 of a gallon :/

..although according to a recent study - Australia is overpriced on pretty much everything.

@kerri: Yeah, I'm going to live in Australia for a year and have been horrified by how much more expensive everything (particularly property for rent!) looks as compared to the UK. Though my pay there is also higher than I'm getting here, so I guess it balances out.

After many conversions (and I realise you probably don't care about the price of British milk) I have managed to work out that 4 litres (just under a gallon) of milk (I buy semi-skimmed) is £2 here which works out at $3.11 approx. So it looks like we're on par with the American prices.. and still paying about half of what you are in Australia Kerri... damn. If everything else is as over-priced as your milk I hope you at least get higher wages than we do...

They did this whole comparison thing this week. I remember it said the price of tickets to the cinema was something like $4 difference.

The only unreasonable thing they compared was the price of bananas. They said it was like $1-$2 per Kilogram around the world but it was $13 a Kg here in Australia - BUT - this was at a time where QLD had been flooded and they are major supplier of bananas - so with the floods crops were destroyed - and naturally bananas were harder to get and therefore the price shot up.

I tried looking for the comparison list but I can't seem to find it - I was watching it on one of the breakfast news shows but I cant remember which one. But there were a few items which were realistically comparable and the price difference was amazing (bananas weren't realistically comparable)

It hovers between $3.50 and $3.99 here, but it's never quite touched $4.00.

Around $2.50 for a gallon of 2% here in Wisconsin.

That's probably because we have all the cows ♥

I live in michigan, and usually its around 2.50$ for a gallon. It's only really expensive in small stores, like gas stations, but I can usually find it in Meijer for cheaper.

From the responses of this post it seems like Wisconsin and Minnesota have the cheapest milk. We have cows in California too so I'm surprised how much milk goes for. The most I seen milk go for was $3.85. Insane!

@Tiger.10.Baby: That's because California puts all their money into stealing our cows and making advertisements for it! So they have to charge more ;D

Canada :P I know in Ontario, and Nova Scotia are about the same. Bread is a bit cheaper in Ontario, though. Bread in Nova Scotia is 3$ for a no name brand, and up to 4.50$ for a brand name. Crazy, esp when we go through like 10 loaves a week, easy, between 6 people.

Is that a sale price? The CVS near me goes for $3.29 regular price. I found that Trader Joes, CVS, and Mi Pueblo are at the cheapest. Fresh and Easy is $0.15 more.

Gosh, we don't buy milk by the gallon! In the UK, we are much more into moderation and restraint! ;D Our big cartons of milk are 4 pints, which is half a gallon. 4 pints costs £1.18 at the cheapest, so a gallon would cost £2.36 ($367). However, sometimes there is a deal where you can get two 4-pinters for £2 ($3.11). People who are lactose intolerant and use soy milk have to pay a lot more of course.

Weird that the price varies throughout America. Do you not have chain supermarkets that are in all the states, and which have set prices? Or can the same supermarket charge different prices depending on the state? The prices I cited are from the websites of Tesco and Asda and Sainsbury's - those supermarkets are throughout the UK and charge the same everywhere.

There are few chain supermarkets that are the same across all 50 states... Safeway is one of the only ones I can think of at the moment... But costs for just about anything depend on where you live, because each state, each county, has it's own cost of living, and cost of living in Los Angeles, CA is going to be different than what we see in Phoenix, AZ
