Reception or Rehearsal?

I am surprising my husband with a grooms cake at our wedding. *Back Story* We got married in 2008 at the court house, we are planning an actual wedding, and acting like its our first wedding and not just a vow renewal. Anyway. I am surprising him with a grooms cake. It will be one of three designs...

The first would be a 1932 Ford Sedan. It would basically be a remake of the car his father gave to him before he died (that his fathers wife sold illegally). I am thinking of making a custom car shop in the back so it looks like the ford is in the parking lot since his love of cars came from his mechanic of a father. I know this cake would make him cry at the wedding, I dont know how he feels about that

The second idea is tied in with the third. The second is basically a cake based on his favorite 360 game, the third is a Mario Brothers Cake. I might tie the last two together if thats what I choose.

The question is (and my facebook is practically split 50/50 on this) do I present this to him at our Rehearsal dinner or at the Reception next to our cake? Did you have a grooms cake? How did you present it?

I would probably say at the reception itself? I think that would make it all the more special. =)

We had a groom's cake at the reception. And if your cake is alternating chocolate/vanilla, and his is chocolate, I think that's fine because it's still a different choice.
I had a vanilla cake with fruit filling for the wedding cake, and the groom's cake was cheesecake, my husband's favorite.

I've never heard of grooms cakes. Also we don't really do rehearsal dinners here. But won't you have a wedding cake at the reception?

@RedFraggle a grooms cake is a tradition from the American south, here is an article on it. http://weddings.weddingchannel.com/wedding-planning-ideas/wedding-cake/qa/what-is-a-grooms-cake-do-you-need-one.aspx.

I think the reception would make more sense, because wouldn't there be more people there? So you can share it with a bigger group of people?

@Aubrey, thats what I was thinking, I know the grooms cake shouldnt be the focal point of the of the wedding but the way I am doing this I want it to get the respect and attention it deserves, thats why I am split lol.

At most weddings the grooms cake is next to the brides cake. so the reception makes more sense. Because it gives variety because not everyone might like the wedding cake but might favor the grooms caked and vice versa.

@squirrel and what happens when our wedding cake and the grooms are the same flavor? Will that be an issue? I really do not want a white (vanilla) wedding cake, because it is a type of cake I wont eat so we are having alternating tiers between chocolate and vanilla. I am thinking of possibly doing a red velvet cake for the grooms cake but as it stands it will be chocolate.

Hmm That is a very good point! Both cakes though at most weddings are different flavors which is why I mentioned reception. But if it's the same then perhaps reheasal? However though that's the fun part about weddings! Spruce up the flavors and variety. :) My wedding cake is red velvet and my husbands will be cheesecake. :)

reception. definally. just put it next to the wedding cake. ours was a army theme cus our wedding was a military wedding. but totally love the car idea, but that might upset him.. the game one sounds cool. USEUALLY the groom picks out his cake.

I was unfamiliar with the "grooms cake" until Dave (the groom) asked me if we were getting a groom cake. I was slightly baffled. Fortunately, we had a friend of the family who wanted to make a contribution to the wedding planning and specifically make the groom's cake, so it was all taken care of. Since it was the groom's cake, Dave got to pick cake flavors and design. It seemed fair, since I didn't give him an opinion on the wedding cake. He is a marine, so the cake design was an Eagle, Anchor, and Globe Marine insignia. I don't remember the cake flavor.

When my sister got married, she made the groom cake for her man. It was the Mustafar scene from Star Wars. It was the groom's favorite Star Wars scene. Pretty cool.

Both times, the cake was served at the reception. I wouldn't do the rehearsal dinner. Only the wedding party is at the rehearsal dinner, meaning no guests can eat and appreciate the cake.

I guess if you wanted it to be a little more intimate then present it at the dinner and if you want alot of people to see it, then do it at the reception. I had one made and I showed it at the rehearsal dinner....
