I just got the Mirena IUD yesterday and after talking to my DR and reading about all the birth controls I thought this would be the best option for me, but now that I am looking up the consumer reviews online there are tons of horror stories but I can't seem to find much recent stuff, so does anyone have the Mirena or have you had it before and what were your experiences, good, bad, recent, or not. Thanks.

I got the Mirena in July of 2007. I had it removed in November of 2009. I didn't really have any complaints. I had a period every month, so I wasn't one of the lucky ones who's disappeared. My period wasn't as heavy or painful was it was before I had it (or after) so I do believe it did help me with that. I will say that I developed awful migraines - but they haven't went away since it was removed, so I don't know if they're connected. I had awful mood swings that HAVE went away since I had it taken out. My Husband said my mood swings while pregnant were nothing compared to the ones when I was on Mirena.. and they're nothing now. I think Mirena caused it. Also, I went from a very active sex drive to absolutely nothing :[ I gained 50 lbs while on it. Whether it's caused by Mirena or just coincidence.. I don't know.

@Mommy2Brycen+1 -- My Doctor told me there's no way the mood swings and weight gain were from Mirena. I don't believe it. >Shrugs< I've read a lot of other forums and things and SEEN many other women who complained of the SAME things.

i myself have not had it - however several of my mommy friends and my sisters all use it. I just sat here and thought about it before typing I know - 10 women who currently or within the last year use(ed) it and only one had minor issues with it. It all depends on your health history i think - as jeremie the one who did have a problem with it - had issues with cysts prior to having it put in and it made them worse - but the company that makes it warns that it will do that.
I would probably use it myself if i didnt already deal with cysts has they all have nothing but good things to say about it. Jeremie even has nothing horrible to say about it - she would of opted to leave it in had it not been for the pain of the cysts

I considered creating a thread asking the same thing. I'm still on the pill, but I really am looking towards an IUD.

The only thing I've really heard is spotting 'til your body gets used to it and a few girls I know have gotten pregnant even though they had the Mirena.

Yeah I have read the spotting, and my dr told me that was pretty much the only thing. But what I have read from other people is pretty much you have all the symptoms of being pregnant. :s

I was considering Mirena but after reading the not-so-good reviews, I decided to go back on the pill. A friend of mine is on Mirena. In the beginning she has a lot of spotting and some heavy bleeding. Her doctor told her it could take up to 6 months for her body to get used to it. The other complaint she had was that it can sometimes hurt after sex, like if her husband moved it.

I don't know about Mirena, but one thing that I've learned is that everyone's body reacts differently to hormone medications. There's no real way to know what's going to happen unless you try it.

For example, I suggested my current BC pill to my roommate. I love this pill. When I switched to it from the BC ring I had no trouble. No breakthrough bleeding, nothing. The only thing that was different is that once I started on my placebo pills my period came a day later than normal. No big deal. My roommate tried the medication and she bled for 3 weeks at a time. So, really while some people might have horrible symptoms on Mirena it doesn't mean that everyone will. My roommate will never take the BC I'm taking, but I don't see myself switching at all.

I've had it for almost 3 years now, I love it, never had any problems with it, and don't get periods. But I do know people that have had really bad problems and other people that have gotten pregnant while on it.

I reallllllyyyyyyyy wanted to get the Mirena but my drs office was being crazy about money issues[they wanted $700 UPFRONT even tho it was 100% covered by my insurence]. My cousin is considering getting the Mirena but isn't certain b.c of the possible "bleeding for 6 months". But like an above commeneter said, everyone's body is different.

Since I couldn't get the Mirena, I'm on Seasonique.

That was my other issue. Mirena was way too expensive! I'm kind of glad I didn't go on Mirena. I'm on Ortho Tri cyclen LO. I'm happy with it. I wanted to try Seasonique but the thought of not getting a period each month scared me. Ever since I had my son, I panic if I don't know my period is coming, LOL.

Yeah, it sucks when the drs office & the insurence company have issues!!

I know what u mean about not getting a period every month. But I wanted something that would possible delay my period when I go to Hawaii in May.. Either way, on monthly birth control or not, I would be getting my period ALL during our vacation!!!

I got the mirena in 2005 after the birth of my third child. I got it inserted 7 weeks post partum. The only problem I had was that my strings from the mirena irritated my cervix. It was an easy fix though. I just went back to my doctor and he trimmed my strings up into my cervix. I had my mirena for the full 5 years. I was concerned about how bad it woudl hurt when I got my mirena removed since they would have to open my cervix to remove the mirena. I got my mirena removed in August of 2010 and it wasn't bad at all. My husband and I have been trying since then to get pregnant and it hasn't happened yet. My suggestion to you if you do decide in the future to have it removed so you can start ttc is to get on the pill for a few months to help regulate you. I should have done this as well. I may be pregnant at this point if I had instead of sitting here still ttc. Good luck! I loved it. No periods for 5 years and not having to worry about getting pregnant was amazing.

My biggest fear with it, is the infertility I have heard about from it. I am so terrified of becoming unable to have more children, but I am really thinking I need something after this baby.

I got mine in November 09. I kept it in for about 7 months then I took it out.
When I got it it did hurt like crap but I was thankful to have it so I wouldnt have to worry about having another kid for awhile. The people I have heard about getting preggo with it was because it had came out and they didnt know...so I recommend checking the "strings" at least once a month. Its not hard to do. kinda feels werid.lol
Anyways, I did have bleeding after getting it for 3 months straight then it lightened up and such. So that wasnt to bad. I did have a little bit of spotting after sex and crap though.
You can have pregnancy LIKE symptoms...I did...and wasnt preggo.lol (having it wont affect the results of a pregnancy test either)
hummmm...oh the reason I took mine out. It caused me to have MAJOR cramping. I already have horrible cramps and with it they were just a million times worse! I know I didnt give it long but I gave it 7 months and to be honest....I wouldnt get it again.
HOPE THIS HELPS!

I had it for three years and I did love it. We took it out thinking it would help with the cysts I have, but in the end it wasn't the reason for them being so bad. If it wasn't for the trial and error of the issues I have right now I'd still have it in. I rarely had a period and if I did its spotting. The thing to remember is that everything has side effects. I can't take any of the birth control pills out there because they make my blood pressure spike and I end up in the hospital, we've tried many and they all seem to do it. Essentially it all depends on your body. Good luck.
