This is completely random, but I was reading a forum entry about caramel possibly causing cancer, and a lot of people mentioned this coloring being present in soda. My question to you is, do you drink soda? If so, what kind? How many times a day/week do you drink it? I'm asking because I honestly don't know when the last time I drank soda was, and I am not a rarity. I might have a Sprite zero once a week or so, but that's it.

So what about you? What are your soda/pop drinking habits? Curiosity is killing me, people!

I very rarely drink soda. Mainly because they which keep me up if I have even the slightest bit. Sometimes I'll have one on the weekend. But usually I go a few weeks without one, then I fiend a Mountain Dew suuuuuper bad, and attack the can like a heroin addict ;D

I pretty much just drink Mountain Dew or Orange soda :)
I like Diet Root Beer and Cherry Coke/Pepsi, but I try to avoid dark soda, it gives me a stomach ache :(

I am a Coca Cola addict.. There. I said it. I have at least one can a day, sometimes two. =\ I know it's bad. I know, I know. I know it's empty calories, but I LOVE IT. The only diet soda I like is Diet Pepsi.. the rest are awful. I drink a lot of Crystal Lite.. but I have a hard time stomaching water unless it's warm out. My daughter and I are trying hard to cut out soda/pop/fizzy drinks ;) entirely but it's hard when you've drank them for so long.. it's seriously an addiction.

@*-.Stephanie.-* have you tried Coke Zero?! AMAZING. It doesn't taste entirely like Coke, but it's 95% there!

Well firstly, it's called pop :)

In answer to your question, I used to drink a few 20oz a day back in college, then for a while I drank a can a day, now I usually drink about a can a week. My cutting back has had nothing to do with cancer concerns though, it's more an attempt to lose weight.

The British call it, "Fizzy Wizzy Pop And Sippy"

Honestly, though, how many documented cases have you seen food coloring causing cancer?

Actually, it's called 'fizzy drinks'! ;D And I never drink them. Never have. I don't like the feeling of the fizz on my tongue. Well, I do drink the occasional Vimto, once in a blue moon. No more than twice a year, I'd say. And Vimto doesn't contain caramel. So I'm totally going to live forever! ;D

The caramel coloring forum was a bunch of garbage. Caramel coloring is in plenty of other everyday items, not JUST dark colored soda. The only 'health risk' you have to worry about from drinking soda is Type Two Diabetes.

I had a sprite last week. It was the first soda I've had in about 2 months. I choose not to drink soda because it has absolutely no nutritional value. It's a waste of calories. Even the diet varieties are a waste of nutrition. I would much rather have a glass of water or a cup of hot tea and get all of my nutrients from actual food, instead of guzzling down 300 calories on soda each day.

To the extent that I or anyone that I know drinks soda, it's always diet. I mean, why on earth would you choose to drink those calories when there are perfectly awesome ways to put them into your body (french fries, I'm looking at you).

And I'm not talking about the caramel coloring anymore. I just read so many people who were sad that they couldn't drink soda anymore, and it shocked me a bit to see how prevalent it is, since I don't drink it and don't know anyone with a "soda habit".

I know you're not talking about caramel coloring, which is why the 2nd part of my comment was about why I don't drink soda anymore. But since you did mention the forum I had to throw in my two cents about it. :)

I read somewhere that there is 110 calories in 8oz of mountain dew. Most cans of soda are about 12 oz... and of course everyone buys those damn bottles which hold around 20 oz. So just drinking like 2 cans of soda you're tossing down over 300 calories of crap! When you actually pay attention to what you're eating/drinking it's kind of shocking. I can't say I'll never have soda ever again because I probably will at some point (at a party or something) but my preference is to not drink that crap.

Totally agree with you about diet soda! It's all I drink. I'd rather eat cookies.

And in answer to your question, I drink way too much. But I blame my husband. He is always stopping at gas stations to get the hugest fountain drink he can find...which I always help him finish.

I've known a few Americans online with hardcore soda habits - on LJ we had a little group to keep track of how much water we drank each day, which I joined to remind me to drink lots of water, but quite a few people joined because they had soda addiction, and were drinking lots of cans of soda each day. They found it hard to cut down, but they felt a lot better and clearer headed after they did.

But I'm with you that it's an odd choice of junk food! When I was a kid, at boarding school, I would go with my friends to spend our pocket money each Saturday, and I'd be buying crisps and sweets, and they'd be buying cans of Coke. Each to his own, I guess! I'm sure the crisps I eat are just as likely to kill me as the soda someone else drinks!

Although, on the very rare occasions I drink soda, I never buy diet. I'm not too keen on artificial sweeteners and would actually rather have something with good old fashioned sugar!

The problem is, at least in America, soda is made with High Fructose Corn Syrup, not sugar. Between artificial sweeteners and HFCS, I'll take the aspartame, thankyouverymuch.

@madeline rain: you know what I find funny about the HFCS bit? When they came out with the throwback sodas (Like Mountain Dew throwback), they advertised the whole 'made with REAL sugar' business with them - and I've yet to meet anyone who likes them ;D

@ Patchwork Princess: I remember a long time thinking European Coke tasted strange. Then someone told me that it's because American soda is made with HFDC and not sugar. For some reason I find that disgusting. Also, coincidence or not, but America is one of the fattest countries in the world, and we are literally being fed corn in most of our meals, so make your connections there.

@Madeline Rain: It's cuz we're all lazy ;D I heard once that we have more fast food restaurants per capita than any other country.

I believe it, too.

Some of our sodas are made with HFDC too. Maybe different amounts - I dunno. When I was in Canada, everything seemed to be sweeter than in the UK - peanut butter was full of sugar, for instance. Here in the UK, I buy peanut butter that is made out of peanuts and oil. No sugar in it. I don't much like sugar.

With regard to American fatness, I don't know if you're the same as Canada, but in Canada I found people went out to eat all the time, and for extra meals after their evening meal. In addition to their three meals a day, they'd go out for dessert, go out for fries, go out for snacks (huge big snacks!), go out for breakfasts which were huge stacks of pancakes with syrup. Portions in restaurants were twice the size as they are here. And socialising always involved lots of food. In the UK, when people get together, it normally involves a cup of tea - or alcohol, depending on what sort of get-together it is. But we're also getting fatter as a nation. Lots of junk food and fast food, and kids spending time on their computers rather than going out to play.

And I would take the HFCS. Obviously there's been loads of controversy around both HFCS and aspartame, and the HFCS controversy is more recent so people are more concerned about that. But weighing them up, I would still choose to avoid the aspartame, for the very few cans of soda I drink.

All I drink is coffee and diet pepsi. So, I usually drink 1-3 20-24 oz bottles of diet pepsi a day. I KNOW I should drink more water but I don't. I have a hard time even drinking one GLASS of water a day. Don't like it. Yeah...I would be in serious trouble if soda became illegal lol

Quite randomly, to balance it out, apparently coffee is good for your heart, and drinking several cups of coffee a day reduces your risk of coronary problems.

I try to keep my pop (Coke Classic, bitches!) intake down to one or two 591mL bottles a week. Which is a huge improvement - it wasn't long ago when I was tossing back at least 700mL a day. I'm at very high risk for diabetes (both my parents have it), so I'm doing a lot to cut down that risk, while still enjoying the foods I love. And for diabetes, the biggest thing I have to worry about is sodium, not sugar, and that a hell of a lot more difficult to cut back on, because it's in everyfuckingthing.

Pretty much never. Gave it up years ago. We always use to have a bottle of something in the fridge at all times, but we decided to kick the habbit because - regardless of whether it causes cancer - it has stuff in there which just isn't good for you.

Coke is pretty much all I drink. Seriously. I never have anything else. So, I'd say I drink like 2-3 cans a day. I don't even remember the last time I had water or anything else, which is... pretty sad.
