The advert doesn't actually even mention the word abortion. If it did, then I would be against it too. I think girls who find themselves in that position should be able to go to someone to discuss ALL their options (keeping the baby, adoption, abortion), and the effects of each (including the psychological effects of having an abortion). I do not think girls should in any way be pushed towards the abortion option, which would be the concern with advertising abortions (which, by the way, does happen in America. Planned Parenthood treat abortions like no more than a business).

But this is not advertising for a business. Marie Stopes is a non-profit organisation who offers advice and, if requested, referral for abortion. And the advert just directs women towards a source of advice. Abortion is never mentioned.

Well I've not seen it, but I knew it wasn't an advert just about abortion, but some people are acting like it is and I think that is sad, and pretty pathetic.

it really freaks me out that girls will get abortion after abortion for birth control or abuse the plan b pill. i think there should be a limit on how many abortions u get. but then i wouldnt want people to do crazy things. its not that hard to be careful..

There is so much that a lot of us could say to this.

I think it's everyone's own personal choice. We have no right to judge them. I personally wouldn't choose abortion. & I think there should be a limit on how many abortions girls get. :|

But the thing is, some girls ARE going to be stupid and use it as birth control, and if you put a limit on how many they could have, then what's to stop them getting a back street abortion?
I agree that you shouldn't be using them as a substitute for contraception but I don't think you could put a limit on it.

It's their own fault if they get a back street abortion. When are they going to learn their lesson?

So you'd rather someone (who is obviously a bit stupid, but is still a person) DIED?

Depends on a person's view.
I personally do not think it is a person until it can survive outside the womb, which is where the limit is usually placed.

They do third trimester abortions. I understand that these girls that have abortions over & over obviously don't wait that long.

I'm saying they need to learn from their "mistakes" rather then relying on abortion to "fix" it.

Well the limit here is 24 weeks (I think), I think that's the second trimester? And having an abortion at that time is not a nice experience for anyone involved :-/

There are a few facilities that will preform abortions after 28 weeks here. & I don't understand why they don't just go through with it at that point. :\

A person can do what they want, but like with everything else, there will be consequences at some point. I'm not going to judge them based on their decision to abort a child, but I still don't agree with it.

28 weeks?!? That's horrendous!

I'd ideally like the limit to be under 12 weeks, or at least under 18 weeks. I've held 24 weekers when I worked in NICU and it makes me very uncomfortable that a girl can have an abortion up until 24 weeks.

I agree with you completely. I understand it's difficult to be pregnant, people's view on you will change. But they're going to be A LOT more understanding if you have the baby & give it up for adoption to a family that desperately wants a baby, rather then aborting it.

24w in the UK, unless it's medical reasons. Then it's legal to 40w.

Some girls do use it as contraception. I personally think that if you have two (or more) abortions in one year, you should have the implant fitted.

You can't force a girl to accept an implant. They have side effects and to force a girl to have one is basically assault. It is suggested to most girls having an abortion here that they have the implant inserted at the same time, but only a small number agree, and even then, most of them, once they get side effects, go to their GP and ask to have it removed. :P

Oh I know. There's no incentive on the NHS to avoid them though. In the olden days (pre-70s) women were warned that they may not be granted more than one. Where do you draw the line? Other areas of the NHS are limited by criteria, for example IVF patients must be under 40, have a BMI under 30 and both partners must be childless and not responsible for any pregnancies. Even with smoking cessation, if you fail, you have to wait six months for a rereferral. Obviously, people are far less likely to have multiple TOPs than fail at giving up smoking, but people DO have multiple TOPs. The record where I work is one woman having three in a year. It's not the sole preserve of teenagers, but women in the 20s and early 30s.
Sigh. I'm not prolife by any stretch of the imagination and I understand it's an ethical dilemma that doesn't have an easy solution. It just angers me that some women have such disregard for the responsibility of their ovaries.

I disagree with that statement. Most girls who get an abortion learn their lesson and are more careful in the future. And I think they'd be even more likely to be more careful if they knew they couldn't have another one.

I think the number of 'backstreet abortions' that would be likely to emerge from this particular scenario would therefore be correspondingly low.

There's a limit on the gestation at which an abortion can take place, and we don't see lots of girls having backstreet abortions because they were too late to have a medical abortion. For the most part girls just accept the limitations, as they probably would if there was a limitation on how many abortions they could have.

First of all.. I happen to be an American.. so dont go all red white and blue on me.. I can call my country stupid if I want to.

For the most part that comment was dripping in sarcasm… But in the past women were more prone to using things like coat hangers and other means to abort. Look it up.

Secondly… Adoption is an option, but the way a lot of people think is that if they have to carry a baby for 9 months they will grow an emotional attachment to it, and then not be able to give it up. I have seen it happen first hand with my cousin’s girlfriend. At 16 she got pregnant… they were in high school and wanted to abort, my hard core Christian grandparents said absolutely not.. Helped them set up an adoption and then at 8 months into the pregnancy my cousin and his girlfriend decided they couldn’t let their child be raised by a stranger. It takes an INCREDIBLY strong parent to be able to give a child up for adoption, and a lot of them wind up backing out.

Third, the welfare rates WILL go up if abortion is illegal. That is an undeniable FACT. Want to know why, because people who have abortions KNOW they cannot take care of a child right then for whatever reason. So what happens when you are forced to raise a child you know you can’t take care of alone? You look elsewhere for help... I am not saying that EVERY woman who is no longer able to have an abortion will immediately run into the open arms of the government. But look around a lot of the women who get abortions are 14-20 years old, still in school, probably have minimum wage jobs if at all... So how are they going to support a baby when they can barely support their selves? They are going to need help and if they don’t have friends and family who can help they are going to go somewhere else.

I am pro choice… I think every women should be able to choose whether or not they want to have a baby. I agree that abstinence and protection are MUCH better options, but sometimes the right choices aren’t made, and people are faced with a hard decision.

I am not just talking out of my ass here either. I was 15 the first time that I got pregnant. I was in a relationship with this guy who I thought I loved but treated me like crap… I was on birth control but for whatever reason it failed. We were ‘broken up’ for the hundredth time when I found out, and at 19 he was terrified. He threatened to have his parents take the baby, he threatened to kill himself, he threatened to have his friends beat me up till the baby died… Eventually I gave in. I was vulnerable, scared, barely passing through my sophomore year in highschool, in a going nowhere relationship with an emotionally and sometimes physically abusive prick.. My mom was constantly pissed off at me and drunk and my dad who I had never met in my life was dead. So I had an abortion. Because I knew, that I could NEVER give up my child I was not strong enough for that. And I knew that if I kept that baby I would be royally screwing up my life and the babies, I would forever attached to that guy, and I would need help.. and lots of it. My mom could barely afford to raise me, much less me and a kid…

How many stories out there do you think line up pretty similarly to mine? How many of those girls just like me, would have wound up as drop outs, or drug addicts, or have the kids taken by CPS, how many of those girls would rely on the state for assistance? How long would it have been for my mom and I before we wound up homeless? ACTUALLY, shortly after, my mom lost her job and I had to go live with my moms cousin who already had 6 kids.. do you think she would have taken me in with a baby? Nope.

So I will step off my soap box, leaving you all with something to think about.

Dude... this was brilliant! Thank you for putting things in perspective. I can't stand people who think everyone uses abortion as a form of birth control.
