Yesterday we found a tick on the back of my cats head. Eurgh, those things make me shudder.
Looking at it easlier today you can see the little legs moving around. I've looked at so much advice online which gives conflicting information - remove it, don't remove it, remove it like this, no remove it like that. After discussing it with my partner we decided to try and remove the tick from kitty. We got hold of it as close to the skin as possible and pulled it out but it seems as though the head or at least part of the head has been left behind.
Again, internet posts say such contradictory things about this. Some say don't worry, the cats body will "get rid" of the head if it's left behind, others say this is the worst possible thing and will result in infection or illness.
Does anyone have any personal experience or good advice? We are of course going to keep a close eye on him and keep checking his head for any signs of infection and should the area become infected we will take him straight to the vet. However, I am worrying about him now and that perhaps we have made the wrong decision trying to remove it for him. :(

call the vet place to hear thier advice (for next time?) - better than online(i dont always trust the internet lol). but i wouldnt know what to do, i prob would have done the same thing u did... i dont really know what a tick is, but there is a tick/flea meds maybe put that on him? i know a tick is a bug but i never had that experience.

i sugest you to call the vet office, and tell them your situation maybe it isnt anything cats can heal themselves pretty good, once my uncle when he was a teen (they told me the story about it) someone shot his cat with a BB gun, and the cat was "missing" for weeks, and she found a good hiding spot in the closet he didnt realize, and they didnt know she was shot, so the bb came out, and she healed herself.

cats do heal themselves pretty good, but i would call and see what they would think. that is a good idea i think i will call for "what ifs" cuz i dunno how they would get em if they were indoors.

At work, we tell people to use Frontline. It doesn't repel them, but it kills them.

My dog had one - my cat has never had a tick, which is hilarious to me b/c he is an outside kitty (neutered, etc) - anyhoo... We took tweezers and just pulled. We got 99% of it and may have left some of it on him. I guess the reason for "freaking out" if you don't get all of it, is because the tick can re-generate, right? But from what I have been told, if you get MOST of it, the chances of it being able to live/regenerate etc is so slim, it's barely worth mentioning.

I have heard of Vaseline - COVERING it in GOBS of vaseline will smother it and cause it to back out of the area - but you have to sit and watch for it to back out and then grab it and burn it.

Ticks give me the creeps =\

When we get ticks up north, I always smother Vaseline on the whole area. That usually gets them to come out.
If the Vaseline doesn't work, we go to the doctor.

Heat supposedly helps also, i use a lighter to burn them off my pants. You could light a match, blow it out and hold it nearby to see if he'll come out.

I agree with Jess. We always used Vaseline on our rottie when she would get them and they would come right out no problem.

My aunt taught me that trick. Cuz she bought a cabin up north, and I got a tick, and about had a panic attack cuz I didnt know what to do.

She goes 'hang on i'll get it out.' and walks off. I was freaking out cuz the only way I knew of at the time was burning them off.
A few second later she comes back and plops a big ass hand full of Vaseline on my leg. (ROFL.)

My face had to have been the definition of "WTF?"

Actually, you shouldn't put Vaseline on a tick. The best way to get rid of a tick is to grab it with tweezers and use some kind of credit care to push it out. It gets the head out. If you do use only tweezers then pulling it from the head is the best way. Then I put it in a little alcohol so it can die and not jump.

See that's the problem, everyone has different ideas about what you should or shouldn't do. Anyhow, he went to the vet and the head was removed. He was injected with antibiotic and the vet gave us a tick remover thingy which are apparently very good at removing them if he gets any more

Any time my cats have ticks (which isnt often, but its often enough) we would heat up a pair of tweezers and then pluck it out... usually freak out at that point and flush the dieing tick down the toilet. lol.
