I don't get it either. The Government should see this as fraud and take away her "disability." Purposely making yourself fat is NOT a disability.

Who is calling it a disability, yo? There is nothing in the article about that. Or do Americans routinely declare all fatties to be disabled?

I think it's routinely assumed. So overweight that you can't work a normal job because small, trivial tasks fatigue you? Can't hold a job because of your size, stature and stamina? Obesity a "medical problem" that you just can't seem to overcome?

Diisssability.

(There's a lot of other things in there too that hover around it, but yeah, that's what most Americans think, I guess)

It makes me SICK that these people get disability because they've let themselves get SO huge that it takes a crane to get them out of their house. It's the same principle as the drunks I know that are on disability. Just because you CHOOSE to drink a 24-pack a day, that does not make you DISABLED.

The problem is, alcoholics are generally at that point where they can't 'choose' to not drink. It becomes pathological, an addiction. In the beginning yes, they might have chosen alcohol as an escape route from some other problems (which is the usual route of alcoholism), or they might have frequently done it just to have fun. I know it doesn't make sense to any non-drinker as to why they're like that - like, why can't they just stop? Why do they need to drink all the time? And the answer is that their brains have been rewired to make them that way. And the 'disability' comes from the fact that their overwhelming need to drink overshadows all other aspects of their life - they can't work, they can't socialise, their families and relationships fall apart, all that. It's not dissimilar to a debilitating illness. The difference is that there is such a stigma attached to it, because we do think of drinking as a choice, unlike developing cancer, for example, which is most likely not a choice. Yet having studied it a bit has personally shown me how helpless they become, and how easy it is to get like that and lose control and lose the sensation of 'choice'.

Still, some people CAN quit cold-turkey, while others have a really incredibly difficult time doing so. It's a whole combination of genetics and environment that determines how well (if at all) you can quit drinking.

Sorry, I know this is completely unrelated to the topic at hand. xD

there's a guy who comes in every day at least five times a day to get a miniature bottle of booze because he cannot function at work without it. he fucking hates that he got himself to that stage. like he's at a manageable level so he can still work, but yeah. as much as it was a choice to drink at some point, it eventually becomes a need. i wouldn't wish alcohol dependency on anyone.

No, I understand all of that. Lived my entire life with a father who is the true definition of an alcoholic, watched him go through addiction, withdrawal, and addiction again. He no longer eats, he just drinks. I understand what you're saying, but I definitely don't think they should get my hard worked for tax money just because they've got an addiction. Meth heads are just as addicted to meth as alcoholics are to alcohol (albeit an illegal substance) and we don't see many meth heads on disability. Well, not for that particular reason xD. I realize that everyone is going to have a differing opinion on that, but I just wanted to put it out there that I've seen what an addict is like. Also, I work in a hospital and to see a woman who has been in a disastrous car wreck, had a shattered right side (arm and all bones in leg/hip), and shattered face, and now has had many septic infections as well as complications and has to go to daily wound care who CAN'T get disability but see a DRUNK on it? It isn't fair. And it happens all the time.

Yeah =( I do totally understand where you're coming from, and it's how I personally feel too. I made the points mainly because many Bloopers don't understand that alcohol/drug addictions are actual true disease states and aren't the person's choice anymore. It is a grey area when it comes to disability payments... to be honest, I'm not sure people suffering from alcoholism can claim disability here (let alone those with a drug addiction). And I think it's an unbelievably horrible twist of fate when an innocent person suffers at the hands of someone drunk at the wheel. It just... doesn't make sense to me in any way.

Oh, I understood what you were saying! I just didn't want you to think that I was making that statement based upon assumptions or misunderstanding of the fact that alcoholism can be debilitating! Apparently, though, the claims that she was on disability are false, anyway! She makes a living by showing off her disgusting fat and having people pay for it! Why people DO pay for it, I'll never know, but ya know.. lol.

Haha, God, that is so gross and wrong on SO many levels. I don't know what's worse, the fact that she enjoys doing it and has no qualms getting paid to do it, or the fact that there are people OUT THERE willing to support and condone and PAY FOR it. *shudders*

I can sort-of sympathize just a bit there too about that woman.

I work in a drug store and one day I was in the Pharmacy covering for a sick co-worker, and I just watched the insurance and coverage parade sail by.

Some old man threw a tantrum, and I mean a fucking crotchety old person TAN.TRUM. over the fact that his Medicare covered all but 3$ of his wife's diabetes test strips and he had to pay 3$ out of pocket, because we would not bill that 3$ to his AARP coverage (you can't double-bill like that on that specific medicare plan. end of story) His wife came in during his complaining to us, and then the both of them began to holler at us for holding up their lunch plans at some restaurant on the other side of town, over 3 freaking dollars.

While that was happening, the woman standing next to him at the next register had the pharmacist and the other pharm tech come out and console her, as her insurance company flat out rejected her 395$ prescription for her liver. Her son (who was probably pushing 600lbs) came over, took a deep breath, and handed his debit card over to pay for his mother's pills, because those were her lifeline.

She was crying, picking herself up, and calling her insurance company as she walked out the door with her receipt and pills, and the old man was still bitching about 3$, as he handed me a 100$ bill from a wallet that contained 4 others.

It angers me to see how our health care system works sometimes, but what really angers me more is how people move about through the system. Some people just take what they've got and move on with life, while others sit there and bitch and whine and want EVERY. LITTLE. PENNY. covered for them and handed to em' on a silver platter.

And yes, I think it's gross and disgusting that she's doing this and able to get disability. From the article I didn't get any vibe that she had a food addiction, or that there was any psychopathological basis for her doing this. (Although I doubt the article is telling even half of the full story...) She's just lapping up the attention and aiming for a record which isn't exactly something one should be proud of. 'Hey grandkids, I was the world's fattest woman in 2010!' (Yeah, if she even lives long enough to see her grandchildren...) I'm hoping she has a big health scare and wakes up to herself.

No no - she totally earns her own way, yo!. She has a career as an internet entrepreneur! She posts vids of her fatness and people pay to watch her fat jiggle! Like, she has the largest belly on the internetz, which earns her hardcore fanz! She makes $4,000 a month by jiggling her fat online! Take a look, yo!

And, like, in her defence, she totally drinks diet orange crush as opposed to regular orange crush!

Just gross and wrong. 600 is already huge why add the 400lbs to it! Someone should have her child taken away from her. That is just wrong!

Agh, I heard about this. Disgusting! What example is she giving her children? It's not healthy to be overweight, she can develop so many health issues. If she gets to the point where help needs to come to her house and cut out her wall, well, it should be denied. She is putting herself into this situation and deserves whatever comes to her. I don't feel sorry for her AT ALL!

I couldn't help but laugh when she said that running after her daughter keeps her weight down. I didn't know that 600 pounds was a good weight? BUT. ADD THE FACT that she can't walk 20 feet without being tired. She contradicts herself.

I hope her kids don't take after her genes. & paying to watch her eat? Give me a break. There are a lot better causes that money can go to. Idiots.

Exactly. It'd be totally different if her Husband was working and was paying for 100% of her costs and insurance, etc, etc.. Hubby read an article about her a few days ago that said she was on government medicaid and getting food stamps.
