I've had two this week so far thanks, somehow, to my new execise class. And it got me to wondering who all on Bloop suffers from them, how often, what triggers them, and how do you deal with them?

And Go!

I get them at random times. Once a week or more. Then I can go a week without one. So odd. Sometimes I just wake up with one, at other times they just develop during the day. Sometimes I have to remove myself from light and/or sound to make them go away. It can take the better part of a day if not longer. Serious waste of my time and not very pleasant either. I have tried various medications prescribed by my doctor though, but they don't always work and usually are so strong they knock me on my ass.

I get them a few times a year in general, and normally they last about 4 hours. According to my doctor, I have "classic textbook migraines" which apparently means I have numb hands and/or and vision problem when I start to get one followed by severe pain in my head, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound (this last part is less sever than the rest). I don't really know of any triggers, but I have tried over the counter and perscriptions meds to help.

I've had one, ever. I took to my bed.
My sister gets them all the time, triggered by taking the contraceptive pill. Now she's stopped, they keep going.

I used to get migraines almost daily, if not then 3-5 times a week. Nothing worked to take away the pain, I tried alot of stuff. I just sucked it up and kept going to work, unless I was doing the nausa and aura then I slept all day.

But anyways here read this:
http://www.bloopdiary.com/money_talks/migraines-anyone

Its something I posted a few days ago and it might actually help with some of you bloopers!

I get them. I figured out my food triggers so get them much less often. I still get them with changes of the weather and a lot of stress. My doctor told me migraines is a condition -- you don't just get one. You either get them or you don't. You can also grow out of them. A lot of people with migraines often have them tied to their hormones.

About 2 years ago I went through a period that I had 5 within 3 weeks. One landed me in the er due to being sick the week before and not completely better so wasn't able to take anything for it cause couldn't keep anything down. Ended up being referred to a nuerologist and was started on a daily preventive that I just quit taking this year cause my migraines have become less frequent. Now when I do get one I take Imitrex to get rid of it and boy does it work wonders. Just let me lay down in a cold dark room with an icepack on my head and give me my Imitrex and after about a 3 hr nap I'm good to go. We never did figure anything out that was a trigger for me. Best thing to do is mark a calendar when you get one and keep track of how frequent they are. My dr also thinks I could be growing out of them. My brother got them also for a span of a few years and he's grown out of them. I've been dealing with them since 2003.

Oh one more thing I forgot. One of the preventives they put me on was Topamax and on the website it gives some helpful information on what can trigger it and things like that. Just go to topamax.com might be helpful I know I learned a lot from it when they first put me on it and I checked the site out. I'm just glad to be off the preventitives was getting old taking something every day plus I didn't always remember it.

I get them and they suck! I really don't know what triggers all of mine since sometimes I just wake up and they are there, but sometimes stress does it for me. My mom, brother, and sister get them as well. Sucks. I usually take Excedrin Migrane for them. It works if I can catch it before it gets to the point where I have no neck because my shoulders go up to my ears. If it gets to the "no neck" part I have to go lay down in a dark room with no light, no sound, and just lay there for hours. There have been a few times where even that wouldn't do anything and it let up even a little bit until I threw up.

when i was younger between the ages of 7-13 i used to get migraines atleast 4 times a week. i would take over the counter meds to help, but if i caught it too late the meds wouldn't help. i'd be really sensitive to smell, sounds, and light. everything would just make my head pound even harder. i was usually forced to lay in a room with the shades pulled shut , no noise, etc with a cold wash rag over my forehead. it wasn't until i fell asleep for a while it would go away, sometimes even that didn't help. on many occasions my pain would be so severe i'd have to vomit in order to get ANY relief (weird i know) .. as i've grown older i don't have them as often, and now when i get them i usually have what's called an 'aura' before. i usually lose vision in certain areas of one or both eyes, followed by the massive throbbing pain and such and the same thing happens, so i lay with the cold wet cloth and relax. if i'm lucky, when i first feel it i grab the excedrin!

Migraines are quite different to ordinary headaches. They start with an aura, a visual disturbance in form of zig zag lines across your peripheral vision (supposedly this is responsible for some historic pieces of art from some rather famous artists), then you get an intense headache with nausea, vomiting and an inability to tolerate the light, and they can last for hours. It's not just a bad headache.

Some people cannot speak properly during a migraine, my mum either speaks backwards or in a weird non-language when she gets migraines.

True, and some people get a weird sort of paralysis down one side of their body.

Scary thing is that I was reading recently that GPs often misdiagnose small brain haemorrhages as migraines (because clearly you can't send everyone with a migraine for a CT scan), and some of those people will go on to have a major brain haemorrhage later.

I also know of a couple of people whose migraines were as result of a hole in the heart.

Something scarier is GP's putting girls on the combination pill who have severe migraines!

Yeah, there is a think between migraine (occurring often) and a hole in the heart.

Yep, my sister gets severe migraines, she used to take daily tablets to prevent them, she had migraines with a strong aura. He prescribed her yazmin, knowing her history of migraine, didn't warn her of any risk associated with taking the combination pill when you suffer from migraine. She wasn't on it that long, she only discovered how dangerous it was when she was at university and saw a nurse about going on the pill again and discovered that it is a massive no no.
