A girl at the local high school died a similar way a couple weeks ago. She drank too much and had an asthma attack while drinking, and they called her brother instead of calling 911. Her death could've been prevented. It's sad that had to happen just because all the kids she was with were afraid of getting in trouble.

I'm not saying this to be an asshole... but aren't most of the cases in people who aren't even legal to drink? I don't know ANYONE of legal age that has died from anything alcohol related, but I can probably name five or six people in their late teens who have died from alcohol poisioning. Is there a link there? The legal age in the US to drink is 21 - and I think that's an appropriate age! I'm not saying being 21 changes everyone... but I know that teenagers don't always have their heads on straight and drinking just makes it worse. There ARE teenagers that are "responsible" while drinking so don't assume I'm slamming all teens.

I agree that the legal age to drink should be 21.
I know SO many people, who are just so irresponsible; and I don't even want to think how much worse they'd be if they could go and legally buy liquor D:

You've clearly not been to the UK, most of the drunks causing problems and generally being cocks are the ones in their mid twenties.

Most of the people here causing problems are people in their upper teens, trying to act like they're in their mid twenties ;)

People seem to be such ASSES in the US! My best friend is Australian [18 is their legal drinking age] and I really don't hear many stories of people being complete twits while drunk. US people are messed up! :P The guys drink to show off and the girls drink to be "cool" and "fun". I just don't see how it's worth it, either! Most of my friends drank underage and were pretty responsible... but I do know a few friends who ended up with DUI's, MIP's, alcohol poisioning, etc. before they were even out of high school. I couldn't imagine the look on my mom's face if it was me...

I've heard stories about people being stupid while drunk in every country.

It's not just the US.

Lol. I've been to Australia, and believe me, people there can act like idiots while drunk too (and that includes plenty of Australians over the age of 21!).

But do you think those people will become reponsible when they turn 21?

Nah, I think responsibilty depends greatly on the person.
But I also think that sometimes certain people just need those extra few years ;D

I didn't get drunk till I was 18 (I'd tried sips of alcohol under parental supervision), had a 12 pack in 2 hours, vomited, and haven't been that drunk since. I hear all these stories of teens going to parties at like 14/15/16 and it makes me glad that I was in college before I got drunk the 1st time. A friend of mine went to a neighboring uni where he ended up not knowing ANYONE, got alcohol poisoning and a STRANGER ended up taking care of him (w/o her he said he probably would've died b/c there was no one else in the room) and even w/ something like that he didn't stop; he went back in like a month and drank like a horse. I just don't get that. It's 1 thing if you're an alcoholic, it's another when you just... do it at parties and you KNOW that it's gonna hurt the next day.

I'm sorry, but a buzz like that just isn't worth it.

I think it depends how sensible the teen is. Here the drinking age is 18, but I was going to parties and drinking from when I was 15. For three years I drank responsibly and never drank so much that I was unwell. The first time that I did drink TOO much and get sick I was actually 18 and in university!

In the UK the drinking age is 18. I can't imagine being in university and not being allowed to drink! And the majority of 18 - 21 year olds here drink responsibly. The ones that AREN'T drinking responsibly at 18 aren't drinking responsibly at 21 either. It has far more to do with the person and their attitude than the age.

It's just weird that in the US you can get married, care for a child, smoke, drive a car, join the army and own a gun before you're allowed a glass of wine with dinner! I mean if your 18 year olds aren't responsible enough to cope with alcohol, are they really responsible enough to carry a gun?
