i never bother getting a flu shot.

can people either learn how to use the link code, or failing that give a basic run down of what happens in the vid/article? it may be kinda whiney, but it's kinda a pain in the ass.

I got it because, going into and working in the hospital system, I'd kinda be an idiot not to. xD

yeah i don't think it's really necessary for me considering i don't come under any of the risk factors or work in the medical industry. other wise i totally would get it. never had the flu, i hear it sucks ;D

Ah, yes, me too. I never got them until I worked in a hospital. Now they don't FORCE us to get them, but they do HIGHLY recommend it and look at you like you're nuts if you choose to not have it xD.

I myself don't get a flu shot, but my partner does. It doesn't seem to be an issue for him. I should probably get it, I am just lazy.

My daughter is getting her whooping cough vaccinations, there is NO WAY I wouldn't get it for her.

But yeah, this isn't something that would stop me from getting the shot. My mum is allergic to peniccilin, and if she gets that she gets incredibly sick. Doesn't make me start threads saying "DON'T TAKE PENICILLIN!"

I've gotten a flu shot twice.
Both times I got it; I got the flu worse than I ever had.

So needless to say I dont get that anymore! ;D

Yeah, unfortunately the vaccine only protects against certain strains of flu, so you can still catch another strain.

Mmmm, the flu is very volatile, and displays something called 'antigenic drift', which means it's constantly changing its genetic make-up. So basically, you can get 2 or 3 flus shots (against different 2 or 3 strains) and that still doesn't protect you completely. But the seasonal flu vaccine is engineered to target the predicted-to-be most common flu for that season.

Meh, I'll take my chances. ;D
When I get the flu normally it only lasts a day, if that. When I got the shot, it lasted foooevar. (like 3+ days. which is foooevar when you feel like you're dying.)

For me the reason for me to get the flu shot is because I work in healthcare, and so in the case of a flu epidemic, I am more likely to be exposed to the virus, and if I was to get sick myself it could have consequences for service provision and patient care (and that includes patients with other diseases, not just the ones with the flu). This already happened to me once... when I got flu immediately before I was supposed to start a weekend of night shifts. There was no way I was fit to work (I could hardly stand), and for the hospital it was a complete disaster as it left them short staffed at a time of day when there's far less staff around already.

Because of that, I have once had the flu shot since (the other years I've just not been able to attend at the right times and have missed it), and I was of course fine with it. I probably will get the regular flu shot this year, but I'm undecided on the swine flu vaccine, because of the fact it hasn't been as thoroughly tested (although it is closely based on the regular flu vaccine which has been). As far as swine flu goes, I have also been hearing stories from ex-colleagues now working in Australia, who, during their winter, saw a surprisingly number of YOUNG people who were seriously ill with swine flu to the point that they required intensive care and even ECMO (explained further up the thread). So, the belief that people hold that this virus is harmless if you're young and fit is untrue. A young fit person is however more likely to become seriously ill with swine flu than with regular flu.

I think every vaccine should be considered on an individual risk:benefit basis. If you have a low immune system, or diabetes or asthma, or are pregnant your risk from flu is higher, and the risk of flu probably outweighs risks of the vaccine. I do not personally think the risk from chickenpox justifies vaccination (and it is not even offered on the UK child vaccination schedule). I do not believe all children need to be vaccinated againts hep B (again, in the uk they aren't). But for measles, meningitis etc, it seems obvious to me that the risk of death and serious complications from these diseases outweighs the TINY risk of side effects from the vaccine (remember the story above referred to 1 in a MILLION!). And of course remembering, that for many of the side effects associated with vaccines according to the media and anti-vax groups there is NO MEDICAL EVIDENCE that those events (e.g. guillan-barre, autism) were even related to the vaccines.

But anyway, I'm personally undecided about the swine flu vaccine, but I think anyone who bases their decision on the vaccine on the video posted at the top is pretty silly.

As far as H1N1 goes, I've seen the effects of it first hand on CHILDREN. Half of my class had confirmed swine flu, and others were out sick, so we assumed they had the same, but they weren't confirmed. These poor little ones were VERY ill... out for up to 2 weeks with very high fevers, they were very weak, and just SO sick. It really seems to hit the little ones hard, much harder than regular flu. A few kids in our school have been so sick, they've had to be hospitalized, however, thankfully, we have not lost any of our precious little ones. Several teachers have gotten the H1N1 virus, and it knocks them out for several days, sometimes over a week. It just seems, to me, that because we have absolutely NO immunity to H1N1, it hits people so much harder than the regular flu. The symptoms are more severe, fevers are higher, and it takes longer to get over. Now, I am SO not a medical professional, but that's what it's done to those around me. Thankfully, neither I nor my daughter have gotten H1N1.

it takes longer to get over? i thought it took less time, but just sucked more. most of the people i knew that had it knocked them out for a week at the most, where as "regular" flu can screw you up for at least two weeks.

Not from what others have told me... they've said if you're normally down with the flu for a couple of days, your out for a week, if it you're normally out with the flu for a week, H1N1 hits your for 2 weeks. These kiddos that have had it have been out for a LONG time! Like I said, though, I haven't had it, just known lots and lots of people who have. My good friend was out for 10 days with it, and she said with the regular flu she's only out 3 or 4 days.

At least it's confirmed for you.

For campus, it's just assumed all cases are swine flu, so anyone with a headache is crying H1N1 and getting out of class.

The only reason I'm not doing it is because I have an irrational fear of needles, I'm just a big weenie.

I'll only say one thing. If you get your kids vaccinated without doing the research about risks first, you are ignorant. If you do NOT get your kids vaccinated without doing the research about risks first, you are ignorant. My daughter only gets some vaccinations; others we skip for a variety of reasons (one reason being that she has had a reaction to two so far). However, I respect other parents' decision to fully vax according to the AAP and whatnot. But if someone gets in my face and tells me my decision is "barbaric?" Yeah, I'm going to completely dismiss their opinion. How ridiculous.

I think you've been pretty smart about your vaccinations. You've weighed up the risks and benefits of both, considered each one individually and are protecting your child. :)

that's what i like to see. someone sensibly weighing up the options and not just blindly getting every vaccine [is a chicken pox one really necessary?] or flat out saying no and not even attempting to do any research.

Personally, chicken pox is a bitch, but as a little kid, getting warm baths and sitting around on your ass in front of the TV for a week is worth the itches. :-p
