When we have our next baby we want to use cloth diapers. Do any of you use them? What convinced you to use them? Any tips?

I'm thinking about the same thing... actually thinking about making my own. Not sure, though.

I think they're a good idea in terms of money saving but eugh, I don't think I could deal with washing dirty nappies!

My mom used cloth diapers with my brother. You can still find them at select stores.. They're a lot of work, though. You (should) rinse the urine-soaked ones and you have to get the chunkies out of the #2's before you wash them. But, y'know, if you have time to do the work, they save quite a bit of money. Some day-cares, though, don't deal with cloth diapers, so you might want to think about that too.

Here's a pretty good site with how-to's of cloth diapering.

I have been cloth diapering my son for 7 months now. My interest was sparked by one of my friends who uses them.. and how dang cute they are. So I looked more into it, and once I learned what kinds of chemicals are in disposables, and the statistics regarding disposable and our landfills, I decided to make the switch.
We first started out using prefolds and covers. I use GMD prefolds (greenmountaindesigns.com) and I custom order my covers from dirtydevildiapers.com. (her diapers arent that great, but her covers w/ snaps are AWESOME. We also use thirsties and bummis, but I prefer snaps, which they dont offer in cute colors & prints.) We also dont use pins.. we use Snappi's instead. Prefolds & covers worked GREAT for the smaller stage.
However, once my son became mobile and we needed a "quick" diaper change.. I started to use Pocket dipes. Since you just stuff them and snap em right on. (I only use snaps, as a personal preference.) My faves are Fuzzi Bunz, Happy Heinys, and Knickernappies. I primarily use prefolds as inserts, as I find them most effective at containing messes.

As far as tips:
1) When you first start out, dont buy a lot of one brand, item, or type. Most people have to get a "feel" of whats right for them and their baby. So buying 1 or 2 of whatever you think might work, and then trying them out first, works best. I've tried SO many different brands, and settled on just a few that work the best for us.
2) Everyone has their own personal preference, but I definetly recommend getting the SNAP option when possible. They last MUCH longer than velcro or aplix, and you wont risk any damage done in the wash.
3) Buy one size when possible, that way you wont be needing to buy different sizes as baby grows. From what I hear, its hard to get a good fit on OS dipes w/ newborns.. so you probably will need to buy a few NB or small dipes until babe can fit OS. I also hear Happy Heiny snaps down small enough to fit a newborn.

A few sites I recommend are diaperswappers.com and diaperpin.com. Diaper Swappers is an online forum where you can buy, sell, and trade dipes.. as well as get questions answered and the like. They have helped a TON. Diaperpin is just a great way to educate yourself on everything CDing involves. =)

to add what julie has said:
Check out Miracle diapers. It is a non-profit that helps families keep their babies in cloth. Tell Lisa that Samma sent you ;)
I have a 6 month old niece who has been in cloth since birth, i also have my own mini-stash that was used on my nephew [before her was potty learned] and now my niece.
I recommend looking around hyena cart. There are some excellent WAHMs who make excellent diapers.
Some people are intimidated by pre-folds & snappis. don't be. it just takes some time to master the fold that works best for your kiddo.
There have diaper sprayers that attach to your toilet plumbing, liners etc to keep the "work load" of using cloth down.
If you like the idea of cloth but aren't keen on all that laundry, then there is the option of gdiapers as well.
if you want some suggestions of online stores of some really awesome WAHMs, let me know. i can pass on a ton of links.

i didnt give CD 100%. I felt unprepared and overwhelmed and i didnt research it enough. By the time i got into CDing my son was 8 months old and i couldnt find a diaper that worked for us.I gave up way to easily. However for baby #2 i feel completely prepared for CDing. I will get a few bumgenius all in ones a few BSRB and a few goodmama diapers but most of my stash will consist of pre-folds and diaper covers.

i agree hyena cart and diaperswappers.com are awesome websites!

I thought about it, but I use the cloth diapers as burp clothes. Maybe the next one I will look into and think about using them as diapers more than I did with my daughter.

They are great for that! I love them lol. So absorbent which is awesome because she likes to gnaw on them since she's teething.
