I discovered earlier today that my cat loves Shanghai Bok Choy (which is my bearded dragon's favourite food). She also loves cheese and salsa. As well as electrical wires and my bearded dragon's tail (she gets a smack for going anywhere near either, because she knows better). She tends to spend a lot of time in the bathroom chasing silverfish, but at least bugs are one of the more normal things for a cat to nom.

My beardie tries to eat anything green, including nail polish, blankets, plushies and figurines (dinosaurs and dragons XD), and anything shiny, including the stainless steel liner of the bathroom sink and spare change. And he frequently tries to eat the mouse arrow on my computer screen, which is hilarious. Rice Krispies are another favourite, but since they're processed foods, they're rare treats.

What kind of strange things do your pets get into?

My dog loves to eat cat food, & peanut butter is his FAVORITE. I also have to be careful when I walk him that there is no poo on the ground because he will eat it. He's very weird. He wont eat lettuce or mushrooms but just about anything else he tries to eat. He loves the shrimp pasta from Red Lobster, fucker is always trying to get to my plate before me when I have that for the lunch. LOL, my beagle is a silly dog. *shrugs*

I have a theory, I have no idea if it's true and I have no stats to offer, but here goes.....

It seems to me that dog's (& cats?) don't live as long as they used to. That they seem to be getting all these different sicknesses, it's not uncommon for one to have their family pet on medication as they get older. I believe this is do to the cutting corners on their food. (some do go with the all natural food, and pay that extra money, but not the majority of pet owners)
This can be seen as a whole other industry, pharma-corps for pets. I bet, if we dont already, pet health care insurance may be in the near future.

Now some may laugh, and think this whole theory of less-healthy food, leads to vet bills and pills for fluffy. But isn't this same scenario happening to us humans, only it's no longer cute and silly.

My dog's aren't to big on their vegetables. but charlie will chew the crap out of - the phone, shoes, remote controls. just about anything one leaves on the coffee table -it will be HIS ;D
tore up a box of crayons once to. oh oh and just the other day he chewed up my sunglasses grrrrr!!!

I think there is an increasing problem with pet obesity (and diabetes). It's hardly surprising though. These days people can't take responsibility to eat sensibly and protect their own health (or their kids health), so how can we expect them to be responsible with their pets? My vet has posters up which say giving a dog two crisps (chips) is the equivalent of a human eating a whole burger. I think people are probably also feeding their pets too big portions and not exercising them enough.

I don't however think that the problem originates with the pet food being produced (and that shouldn't have changed greatly over the past 20 years or so, except possibly for the better)... I think it's in the extras that pets are getting from their owners, and the fact they're simply getting too much food.

My cat eats tinned cat food and he's been perfectly healthy on it (he's not allowed dry food because when he was on a part-dry diet he developed a urinary obstruction, so he needs the water content from wet food). The result of that however is that he's had to have teeth removed (since he's not eating dry food now), but that doesn't seem to bother him one bit. And as an indoor cat he's at risk of obesity anyway, as he gets less exercise. But he's not obese, because I don't overfeed him.

And the majority of cats these days will still live till they're 15 - 20 (my last cat was 17 when he died), and most of them are getting fed processed pet food.

same here.

it's hard to find any pet food whereas all the ingredients came from one country.
especially with the major brand labels.

remember the recent scare, what was it... glucose from China or something

We've not had any pet food scares here, for ages. I've read quite a few happening with American brands though. We feed our cat a few brands, mainly just an asda's own brand, but she has hi life at the minute, all the ingredients are from canada and it is made in Canada. She has had sheba before, but we only give her that when we run out of her usual asda food.

Treacle gets whiskas or kitekat, because for some reason those are his favourite (he's not a fan of asda or tesco's own brands, or felix. Never tried sheba though).

The fact of the matter is, just because one company puts all the ingredients together, and in a can. It in no way means all te ingredients came from there as well.

They buy sugar from this country, salt from that one. horse meat from this one, etc etc etc

mix them all together and call it theirs.

Now their are exceptions. for you more expensive products. Those ones will say things like: all ingredients were home grown here on our farm. and wee only food our cows (and other livestock) organic foods. and never protein pellets (made from rendering other animals, like dogs, cats, road kill, sick animals, etc)

look,

when you look at the can, and there is a list of ingredients. You then have to find out where the corporation obtained each of those separate ingredients. each ingredient, often, comes from a different place

ps. the US brands, traced the poisoned ingredient. that ingredient came from china.

so this is not a case of of those dumb americans messed up again.
just as your pet food doesnt come from your country, it comes from Canada.
and whatever corporation puts out the product, well, they got the ingredients from all over the world

It says that all ingredients are produced and sourced in Canada and the product is then put together in Canada, if it wasn't true, the product could not be sold in the EU due to EU law. They used to produce in the UK as well to avoid travel costs, but the travel cost was less than producing the product and sourcing the ingredients from the UK.
