I don't think that I personally have more rights than anybody else, of course not! Every living creature should be entirely free, and i'm no better than any other.
ESPECIALLY because i am an american.

What I meant by that was simply that this country is supposed to be where we can be free, and live in peaceful, fair lives. We're supposed to have rights no one, not even the president himself can take away.
and that's just not how it always goes down.
my country is a big fat ROUSE.

GOSH, YO. I AM NOT SURE. I MEAN, PEOPLE SAY REALLY DAFT STUPID THINGS THAT SHOW IGNORANCE, PREJUDICE, IDIOCY AND NARROW-MINDEDNESS, AND MY REACTION IS SOMETIMES 'WTF, YO?' BUT I AM NOT OFFENDED, I DON'T THINK, THAT AN IGNORAMUS THINKS SOMETHING STUPID. LIKE, IT'S KIND OF TO BE EXPECTED. I AM INTRIGUED, MAYBE. I MIGHT ASK QUESTIONS TO SEE HOW FAR THEIR OPINIONS GO AND WHETHER THEY CHANGE THEM IN THE LIGHT OF NEW KNOWLEDGE. AND IF THE PERSON TURNS OUT TO BE REALLY HOSTILE AND IDIOTIC, I WILL JUST DISMISS THEM, YO. THEY ARE NOT WORTH TALKING TO. IF THE PERSON SHOWS SOME INTELLIGENCE OR OPEN-MINDEDNESS, I MIGHT HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH THEM.

IT'S INTERESTING. LIKE IF SOMEONE SAYS SOMETHING THAT IS A STEREOTYPE ABOUT A GROUP TO WHICH I BELONG, I MIGHT THINK IT IS OFFENSIVE, AS AN ABSTRACT CONCEPT, BUT I DON'T TAKE PERSONAL OFFENCE. I MEAN, WHY DO I CARE IF SOME STRANGER THINKS SOMETHING DAFT? IF THEIR VIEW REPRESENTS A MAJORITY, THEN I FIND THAT DISTURBING, BUT I AM HARDLY GOING TO BECOME OFFENDED AT ONE PERSON WHO HAPPENS TO EXPRESS A MAJORITY STEREOTYPE. I'D TALK TO THEM, MAYBE, AND SEE HOW SERIOUSLY THEY WERE EXPRESSING IT. BUT, GOSH, IF IT'S A WIDER PROBLEM, BEING ALL 'OFFENDED' ISN'T GOING TO DO MUCH. YOU NEED TO FIND STRATEGIES TO CREATE AWARENESS.

I AM ALSO CURIOUS - HOW DO PEOPLE ACTUALLY DEFINE 'OFFENDED'?

DO YOU MEAN BEING HURT AT SOMETHING SOMEONE SAID? OR BEING ANGRY? BECAUSE, TO ME, THOSE THINGS ARE ENTIRELY CONTEXTUAL. YOU CAN'T SAY ONE SPECIFIC THING ALWAYS HURTS/ANGERS YOU. IT SURELY DEPENDS WHO SAID IT, AND IN WHAT CONTEXT, AND MAYBE WHETHER YOU HAPPEN TO BE PMS'ING, YO! EMOTIONAL RESPONSES ARE NOT UNIFORM AND RELIABLE.

OR DO YOU MEAN THE OBJECTIVE VIEW THAT SOMETHING SOMEONE SAID/DID IS WRONG AND DEROGATORY OF A CERTAIN GROUP? THIS MAKES MORE SENSE TO ME - BUT IN THAT CASE I WOULD NOT SAY 'OMG, I AM SO OFFENDED, YO!!!!' I'D SAY 'THAT IS AN OFFENSIVE THING TO SAY'.

Not much offends me. I have little things that urke me though. One of them would be what Shannon said, judgmental comments from Christians and other religions. Mostly it is Christians who are the ones who judge the most though. Other then that nothing really shocks me. I have pet peeves but those aren't considered offensive.

Well, that's not EXACTLY what I said. lol While those things do make me angry, they don't offend me. What offends me is being placed in a generalization about Christians (all Christians are.....), among other groups.

I too get offended by insults to my intelligence.

I have been officially tested...I KNOW what my IQ is and that I fall into the two two percent.

As much as I love colin..he drives me nuts with being SO condescending because he went to uni and I didnt. An education does not make someone intelligent.

Wow, I'm really impressed. I don't think I've ever met anyone in the two two percent before. ;)

And in response to your question...a bit of both. I dont feel I lack anything because I dont have an online arts degree :P ..I just dont like the assumption that not going to uni means you couldnt :P because you werent quite clever enough.

Ah, I know, I was just teasing you. Bit of gentle ribbing. ;)

That's fair. Some of the most intelligent people I know never went to university. Most of the time it was owing to lack of opportunity - quite a few who needed to go straight into full time work to help out parents with finances. There are a few who just decided that wasn't the right route for them. Given that so many graduates these days struggle for a job anyway it makes sense to go with what's best for each individual personally.

Going to university isn't proof of intelligence - just like IQ tests aren't either. They're just evidence that you are capable of performing certain skills.

On a more serious note, is it the general judgment about lack of university education equating to lack of intelligence that offends you, or the personal slight on your own intelligence?

I don't think it necessarily offends me, but I certainly hate when people assume that because I don't have a degree that I'm unintelligent.

That is so true. People who think that having a degree makes you smarter is blind. Anyone can be book smart but it takes skill to actually do real work. I know a lot of people like that and I argue with them that they are wrong for thinking that.

HAVING A DEGREE DOESN'T ALWAYS MAKE A DIFFERENCE. MY SISTER'S BOIF TOTALLY DIDN'T BELIEVE THAT I'D BEEN TO UNI WHEN HE FIRST MET ME, YO! HE WAS OH-SO-OFFENDED BECAUSE I WAS SAYING I WOULD QUITE FANCY BEING A DOCTOR (HE'S A DOCTOR, YO!) SO HE WAS RANTING TO MY SISTER ABOUT UNEDUCATED PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY CAN BECOME A DOCTOR JUST LIKE THAT AND THEY DON'T REALISE HOW HARD IT IS. AND MY SIS WAS ALL 'ER, MY SISTER IS CLEVER AND HAS A MASTERS DEGREE', AND HE TOTALLY DIDN'T BELIEVE HER! SO FUNNY! JUST BECAUSE I TALK ABOUT SILLY THINGS AT THE PUB, YO! LIKE I AM NOT GOING TO HAVE AN ACADEMIC CONVERSATION AT THE PUB! HE THOUGHT I HAD ADHD BECAUSE I WOULD SWITCH CONVO TOPIC ALL THE TIME - FROM DOCTORS TO FARTS, YO! ;D

It drives me more angry when men doubt your intelligence because your a female. My husband and I bought a desk a week in a half ago and we had my car. I drive a Mazda 6 hatchback, I can hold a lot of stuff in my car. The guy at the store doubted me. He didn't believe me. He immidently asked my husband if he had a larger car. He made himself look like retard though, haha. The box fit my car plus extra room. The guy was like, "Oh it fits, sorry I doubted you."

I get offended when people think that because I am white, that I am racist, and that an African American can say things about me but when I say something back its Racist. Sorry if I have offended anyone but its just something I feel. No negativity towards you in any way, just thoughts is all.

I don't get that either. If a white person says something they always bring the racist bullshit. I want to slap them because I have been accused of it a few times when I never said anything! They made this whole lie in their heads. If a person who is nonwhite is going to say something racist, then they shouldn't be surprised when something is said back. I'm not racist, I hate everyone.

People don't realize that it is racism all the same, no matter if its racism towards black people or racism towards white people or racism towards purple people, any generalization about any race of people is racism. But I hate it when people (not saying you necessarily) use the 'they can call me white trash/honkey/cracker and its okay' excuse to be racists themselves and say racists things. I guess I don't get it either because none of those 'white' insults would really offend me.

I get offended when people are teasing me. But I never tell them I'm offended. It doesn't make sense flaring temper at such things and then I ended up losing a friend.
