You just made me realise something about Alisons list... lol no wonder Brits would get these more correct than americans would... look at all the UK in there and the countries that are way closer to the UK than the US...

Russian Canadian? Really? That i did not know...

The Brits damn well should know ALL these answers, given that most of the countries mentioned are within the EU (as we are! United States of Europe, and all that shit! lol), or a part of Great Britain (our actual country!), or in the case of New Zealand and Canada, and South Africa - are part, or were part, of our bloody British Empire!! hahaha. It is testimony to our failing education system that most Brits would not know this at all!!

Then maybe we should do one concerning countries further away from us and that weren't once part of our empire.

Not only that, but let's not forget about Punjabi as well. Canada has a rather high Pakistani and Indian population.

I asked for most commonly spoken first language. I think you would find that the number of people for whom Punjabi is first language is an extremely small percentage.

I would be curious as to how many people know that Canada has a monarchy. Less than 3% of Canadians are Pakistani or Indian.

Yes, but to be fair, there's not many countries 'close' to the US except for Canada, Mexico and Cuba!

Yes, well, I think that's kindof my point! lol Or my theory. ;-D Maybe that's the reason why Americans are so called "ignorant"... not necessarily because they don't want to learn or because they're not taught something, but because they don't have such contact with other cultures and nationalities as Europeans do. Either way, whether it's the main factor or not, I still think it's an important piece to the puzzle that can't be put aside.

Also, an American on Bloop just told me yesterday that they thought French was as commonly spoken in Canada as English (it's of course not, not outside of Quebec anyway). So apparently they don't even know about the countries which ARE right next to them!

But Alison, that just means SHE didn't know. That doesn't say anything about what the rest of us know about Canada.

Oh, I absolutely agree. And I wasn't trying to generalise, I was just pointing out that the problem goes beyond not knowing about European countries.

Hmm... not sure what the context was, but I don't think that sounds like such a horrible mistake... I mean, they knew they speak french in Canada in the sense that it's a bilengual country. It's not as commonly spoken, but it's everywhere even in the non-french parts. *shrugs*

Well, duh, Beth's canadian, things like this are just plain wrong for them. Just like how worked up you get over Scottish knowledge mistakes. And just like I feel like I have to point out that the language is not called brazilian, but indeed portuguese. Things get to us more when we're from the country. And especially in this specific case with the opinion of a non-french canadian!

Considering that boxes of food in Canada not only have English on them, but also French, it's not such a horrible mistake to make, and a perfectly understandable one if they haven't ever actually BEEN to Canada.

Thats as bad as not knowing what language is spoken in the next state! Where I live everything is in welsh and english, but its pretty obvious that the main language of wales is english!

Canadians don't speak Russian. We have a lot of different cultures, meaning we have many people who speak many languages. Because one couple from Canada spoke Russian doesn't mean Canada speaks Russian. Sounded kinda ridiculous to me...

Yes, but according to Wiki, only 22% of Canadians speak French as a first language, and it was first language which I asked for. So I would have said English first too.
