The following story is from This is True dated 17 July 2005. It is Copyright 2005 Randy Cassingham, all rights reserved, and reprinted here with permission:

"Ethical" Defined

After more than 100 dead dogs were dumped in a trash dumpster over four weeks, police in Ahoskie, N.C., kept an eye on the trash receptacle behind a supermarket. Sure enough, a van drove up and officers watched the occupants throw in heavy plastic bags. They detained the two people in the van and found 18 dead dogs in plastic bags in the dumpster, including puppies; 13 more dead dogs were still in the van. Police say the van is registered to the headquarters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the two occupants, Andrew B. Cook, 24, and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, identified themselves as PETA employees. An autopsy performed on one of the dogs found it was healthy before it was killed. Police say PETA has been picking up the animals -- alive -- from North Carolina animal shelters, promising to find them good homes. Cook and Hinkle have been charged with 62 felony counts of animal cruelty. In response to the arrests PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said it's against the group's policy for employees to dump animals in the trash, but "that for some animals in North Carolina, there is no kinder option than euthanasia." (Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald) ...Oops, my mistake: that's "Playing God" Defined.

In his author's notes section, Cassingham had more to say about this story:

The more I learn about PETA, the less I think of them. The story of them killing animals isn't even unusual. According to PETA's own filings, in 2004 PETA killed 86.3 percent of the animals entrusted to its care -- a number that's rising, not falling. Meanwhile, the SPCA in PETA's home town (Norfolk, Va.) was able to find loving homes for 73 percent of the animals put in its care. A shortage of funds? Nope: last year PETA took in $29 million in tax-exempt donations. It simply has other priorities for the funds, like funding terrorism (yes, really). But don't take my word for it: I got my figures from http://www.PETAkillsAnimals.com -- and they have copies of PETA's state and federal filings to back it up. The bottom line: if you donate money to PETA because you think they care for and about animals, you need to think some more. PETA literally yells and screams about how others "kill animals" but this is how they operate? Pathetic.

And you know what I wonder? PETA's official count of animals they kill is 86.3 percent. But if they're going around picking up animals, killing them while they drive around and not even giving them a chance to be adopted, and then destroying the evidence by dumping the bodies in the trash, are those deaths being reported? My guess: no. While 86.3 percent is awful, the actual number is probably much, much higher. How dare they lecture anyone about the "ethical" treatment of animals!

By the way, I am very sorry about the shitty HTML.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this? I mean PETA isn't really known for its civil tactics, but I don't see too much credibility in this.

this has been in the news several times. The writer sucks, but the story itself is true

Rather, credibility as it's presented like it was written by a 15-year old "rebel".

I've heard this kinda stuff before. Does NOT surprise me. Our RSPCA can be just as bad. They put (healthy) animals down if they aren't re-homed within 2 weeks.

It makes me cry, because every time I go to the pound or the the SPCA and see the dogs and cats there, both newborn and full grown, I feel so bad knowing that some of them are going to find good homes, some of them are going to find bad homes, and some are going to be put down on principal.

I wish I could adopt and help them all, regardless of how much I would have to sacrifice personally. :(

This is not surprising. PETA is full of shit.

I just wish everyone would spay/neuter their animals, it would help.

Exactly! People don't realize just how much good they're doing by paying the $150 and getting their pet spayed/neutered.

If you don't, yeah, then your dog has five cute puppies. Cute until you can't take care of them, take them to the already crowed SPCA, and they're put down in a month because no one could take them in. :(

yes. and there are other places (at least in MN) that you can go to where they will spay/neuter your animal for free or a reduced price based on income. So please please please, get your animals fixed!

PETA is a very extreme group. They often believe that an animal is better off dead than to be owned by a human. That's why they free animals. If anyone says they're PETA supporters... I just shake my head. Like what Beautiful Lies said, it would be better if people got their animals fixed and adopted opposed to buying from backyard breeders and puppymills (aka pet store animals). I've seen many amazing animals get put to sleep simply because no one would adopt them. Even puppies are put to sleep. It's very heartbreaking.

There is no possible way any SPCA can find homes for all the animals they take in. There are many places where the number of animals coming into a center far outweigh the number of adoptions. Last year, my sister and I were actually turned away at the SPCA when we tried to put her cat up for adoption because they simply had no space left. And we weren't the first ones to be turned away, either. Any of the other adoption centers in the same city faced the same issue. The simple fact is that many of these places lack not only space, but the funding needed to expand and adapt. So. I can understand why some places have such a huge euthanasia rate. It sucks, but that's the reality of the situation. You can't save every cute puppy or kitten, just like you can't save every sad faced child.

That said, there are extremists in every group. PETA seems to have a lot of them, unfortunately.

Yeah but SPCA and PETA aren't really affiliated with each other.

I think we all realize that not every animal will be adopted, its harsh, but sad. But that was beside the point here. If PETA is killing and then dumping animals, I don't trust them to be attempting to find homes for those animals in the first place. PETA doesn't have a lot of extremists, PETA in and of itself IS extremist. I refuse to support them.

I will, however, support the Humane Society and the SPCA.

I work for the World Society for the Protection of Animals and this issue comes up a lot within some of our member societies (HSUS is one of them). "No kill" shelters are the best places for unwanted animals, but they can't operate unless they have a lot of funding behind them. It sucks. Nobody WANTS to put an animal down but unfortunately it all comes down to space and money and number-crunching and all that good stuff.

As for PETA, they do some good work. They do some ridiculous things too, and some sad things like this, but they're not all bad. They pull a lot of weight, so they can get shit done. A couple of months ago they started gearing up for this campaign against Donna Karan using fur and before it could even really get off the ground, she folded.

The sad thing is, the no kill shelters don't always take animals you want to give them. I wan't to drop off a kitten I found - specifically at a no kill shelter, and they told me to drop him off at another shelter which was a kill shelter. It was backwards to me. =P (I kept the kitten, btw. His name is Soda Pop. =])

There's actually a place near my friend that adopts takes animals from kill shelters, fosters them, and re-homes them. Its very cool. :-) Small operation, but I hope people catch on and support it.

obviously they wouldn't be able to find a home for every animal, but KILLING 83% of their animals, when most are HEALTHY? I don't care how you slice it, they have the funding. They have the resources. They're choosing to murder.
AND THAT IS DISGUSTING.
PETA has always sucked. And the more I hear of them, the more they suck.
