Refuting Homophobia

11/16/2009

begin.

One little thing that has pissed me off recently is people refuting their homophobia. When someone makes extremely anti-gay statements, their first thought is to say "OH, BUT I'M NOT HOMOPHOBIC!" This is always followed by some example of someone they know that is gay and that the person gets along with said gay friend/relative/roommate.

Just because you know a gay person and get along with him or her doesn't mean you are some amazing and accepting person. The rest of what you said is still very discriminatory.

So, what I am trying to say is, fuck you, Mom.

end.

People who say that, need to suck on beg dirty toes for eternity.
Or something.
Just because you know someone that is gay, doesn't make you accepting or understanding.

People do that with racism, too... "OH, it's okay, I have a black friend."
It really just makes them look MORE ignorant and ridiculous.
And I'm sorry about your mom being like that.

That is like people who say 'I'm not racist, but...' Gosh, I hear that a lot where I live, yo - like, I asked a neighbour to recommend me a local doctor and she told me which doctor she has, and then said with a critical tone of voice: 'But, well, he's black, so you know...' and then when she saw me looking a bit confused (like, I had no idea what the fact that he was black implied!) she said 'Oh, I'm not racialist or anything' (like, gosh, yo - she clearly can't be that familiar with the concept of racism as she doesn't even know how to say it! ).

And gosh, fancy using the fact that you know a gay person to prove that you're not homophobic. Like, that's like men saying that they can't be sexist because they know some women!

But, at the end of the day, people never like to admit that they have negative feelings. I mean, just in general terms of human interaction, think of how often someone says 'I'm not being rude, but...' or 'No offence, but...' - and of course they are being rude! But they somehow think that by prefacing their rudeness by 'I'm not being rude', they are making it okay!

That's like saying, I'm not racist, I know a black guy. Man, I'm so removed from society these days, I'd almost forgotten that homophobia existed XD
