Note for those of you using air conditioning this summer

06/18/2010

Hi Bloopers,

This isn't the normal type of BloopNews entry I publish, but I think it is helpful to everyone that pays an electric bill!

I just thought I'd take a moment to inform or remind those of you using air conditioning, that leaving the air conditioning on while no one is at home is wasteful. It is a misconception that it costs more because the house has to 'catch up'. If you are leaving the house, even for a couple hours, just shut it off.

Also, installing ceiling fans and having them pull air from the ceiling downwards will create a wind chill and makes the heat much more bearable.

Steve.

Man, I wish England was hot enough for a/c! It's COLD here right now.

[Acid FairyStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I hope it gets warmer!!

[SteveStar|0 likes] [|reply]

we live in a trailer with 5 cats and two dogs, leaving the a.c off isn't an option lol. Great tip though!

Ah, good point! If you have any pets, you might want to reconsider turning it off completely. lol. It is cheaper however to put the animals in one room and have a single air conditioning unit...

Electric bill, yes; vet bill, no.

[Me, I'm NotStar|0 likes] [|reply]

we always up the AC to bout 78...instead of our norm 70-72..but it hasn't got that high yet.. I dont think..

I just don't like coming home and putting my newborn into oven of an apt

but kudos to those who can do this

Have you considered a programmable thermostat?

[SteveStar|0 likes] [|reply]

we have one but it has like 326936959 different times to set..I'm usually home anyways.. at night we bump it down to 70, 71.. during the day I bump it up .. here lately its been up to 74, 75 with fans... the only time we all leave is on the weekends.. so its just easier this way.

[♥Eric's wife|0 likes] [|reply]

that really depends on where in the country you live and how hot it gets.
though turning the thermostat up to a higher temp while you're out can help.

[Loving Ciaran|0 likes] [|reply]

It doesn't matter how hot it gets, if you're leaving the house leaving the air conditioning on will waste energy.

[SteveStar|0 likes] [|reply]

This is useful, except I'm one of those people that is ALWAYS HOT, so I need the AC on. I keep it on 75 all the time, but my roommate seems to like adjusting it to 86... Whenever she's gone I turn it down. I need the house to be constantly freezing or I'd die.

[GRUNG-Y|0 likes] [|reply]

You sound like me. We always keep ours on 73!

჻ೋ჻ Ok I have another question, sorry to bother you but I can't find anywhere else to ask these things. If I put an entry to where only an exclusive list of people can view, can people who are not on that list request to view it? Thanks! ჻ೋ჻

[AshaliciousStar|0 likes] [|reply]

No people will not be able to see the entry in a list, there is no request to view function for individual entries.

[SteveStar|0 likes] [|reply]

჻ೋ჻ What about if I put it on FO, could you see it in my entry list? ჻ೋ჻

[AshaliciousStar|0 likes] [|reply]

If the entry is on friends only, it will only appear to people in your friends list.

haha its winter here! however, i used to live in the tropics with little ac. its doable in the right house.

[mrs mandy mooStar|0 likes] [|reply]

people leave them on all day? wtf?

[& skull.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

We leave ours on all day, but it's central air. So its like central heating... but cold

It only kicks on when the house drops below a certain temperature. So we usually change it a few degrees when we leave, and keep the house closed up on really hot days so the A/C isn't constantly kicking on.

I definitely turn it off when it's nice outside. I love having the chance to open the house up. My house doesn't have a big tree in the front anymore, so I can't do that too often like I used to Stupid ceiling fans don't help jack.

[Jessica|0 likes] [|reply]

the central air/heating things i understand, dave's got one of those. we have a massive air conditioning unit, it'd be hella expensive to leave that on all day. specially since it doesn't take long to cool the house down once you come home.

[& skull.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Yeah I definitely wouldn't leave an individual unit on while I was gone...no way lol.

you know when I was a kid I totally thought everyone had central air. I didn't even know window things existed.

this has nothing to do with AC, but my frontpage is kinda messed up. Well, just the recent entries area. Usually there's a space between the profile picture and the persons' entry title/name. but now it's all squashed together. Before only the diarist name, I think, was blue, and now the title & their name is blue. i'm using google chrome and have been and this problem just started a few days ago. i don't see anyone else talking about it though. help?

[eringetic™Star|0 likes] [|reply]

I am also on Chrome and do not see an issue with your front page. Have you tried refreshing it?

[SteveStar|0 likes] [|reply]

it's back to normal now. haha. but seriously it was messed up! haha.

[eringetic™Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Sure sure lol

[SteveStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I'm actually having that issue with Chrome and the main page, too. I refresh it a few times, and it still doesn't change.

Yeah, I was too, but after 2-3 of it, it stopped!

I dont't understand why anyone would leave the air conditioning on if they are not home. And hey, I've lived in Brazil, one of the hottest places out there.

~

[internationalStar|0 likes] [|reply]

We leave ours on all day. It only kicks on maybe once every half hour though. Fifteen minutes on the really insanely hot days.

[Jessica|0 likes] [|reply]

Yep old here in England, more like March/April tbh

Ahhhh. Need my AC. I'd rather pay a large bill and stay cool. heh

Right, I turn mine on occasionally when it gets hot in the house... but what I'm saying is that when you're away, leaving it on only wastes energy. If you are able to turn it on an hour before you get home (with a timer) or just put up with the heat for 30 minutes, you'll save a lot of money by switching it off.

[SteveStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I rarely ever leave the house these days though. When I do, it is only to take Josh somewhere or run to the store. I also take heart meds that make me really ill when I get too hot. Have to have it cool to survive. I wish I could move wayyyyy up north where it doesn't get this bloody hot. 98 today.... not even fully Summer yet.

[Dr. Hannibal LecterStar|0 likes] [|reply]

It's a high of 86 here today... still pretty hot! Glad the beer store has air conditioning, lol...

[SteveStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Or people should do what I did: Move to a location that is always between 65 and 80 degrees no matter the season.

[Sunlight Silence|0 likes] [|reply]

You are right, it IS cheaper, but nothing is better than coming home from a 100 degree kitchen and getting home to a 60-70 degree house right away to relax. I remember being outside during band camp all day, 90 degree weather, 80% humidity, and coming home to an air conditioned house. Sit back, and say "ahhhhh"

[Becoming Mrs. BaileyStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Best thing to do is to time the air conditioning system to come on about an hour before you get home, that way it'll be nice and cool for you. The several hours you're away just wastes energy...

[SteveStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Yes, but our A/C is mad old. So you can't have it timed, you have to turn it on manually. I personally prefer fans and open windows unless it's above 85 or 90. We just don't live in a hot enough state to NEED AC everyday, but Rob LOVES air con.

[Becoming Mrs. BaileyStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Programmable thermostat costs less than $20, which you'd save in the first month of using it...

I installed a ceiling fan in the living room to help create a breeze... I don't know if you've seen it yet. lol

[SteveStar|0 likes] [|reply]

You're right, I haven't been to your place in like 25867 years.

[Becoming Mrs. BaileyStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I couldn't agree more. It was 102F here today and walking into a house that was programmed at 73F was just..BLISS. I don't care if the bill is a bit higher! I like to walk in and INSTANTLY feel cool. Up until this summer, I'd lived my entire life in the same house without air conditioning and it was AWFUL to walk into a house that felt just as hot, if not hotter, than it did outside. bah.
