New ideas for Bloop and progress on v3

09/13/2009

Hello Bloopers,

This week I'd like to complete the integration of threaded comments. This has been discussed before, basically your comments area on an entry would work just a forum thread works at the moment. People could leave replies to individual comments, and notifications would be sent to the authors of the comments too. I believe this will encourage conversation and debate. The only technical difficulties I foresee are (1) how this would integrate with the converse feature and (2) how this would integrate with the 'my comments' screen. Any thoughts?

Has anyone used Yahoo! Answers? I'd like to add something like this to Bloop too, would you use it?

I also want to get photo albums working again in Xtra. Anyone interested in using this feature?

Now for the techies at Bloop: I've been thinking a lot about version 3, and am considering making a Bloop diary a 'center console' for managing other diaries. If you have your own domain, you could (in theory) install a set of PHP scripts that would communicate with the Bloop server and display a blog, in effect giving you a diary/blog outside of the website that is still part of the community.

Other planned features for Bloop 3 are:

* Open source coding
* OpenID support
* Email with ON-SITE CLIENT (currently we use third-party software)
* An internal scripting language for those interested in writing more dynamic layouts.
* Polls, wherever you want them.
* Proper permissions system that works more like a file system. (this will be useful, you'll find out how in future entries)

Comment and discuss.

(If I can get Bloop to grow, and premium subscriptions help increase revenue, I'd really like to rent a second server. But before that happens, it really needs updating.)

Another question - at OpenDiary the Diary Master offers a life time subscription for $150, I'm considering this as I'd really like to bank some money for the future of Bloop. It's scary living month to month, but if I have enough money I can secure a year's worth of hosting at a discount rate. Would anyone be interested in this?

Steve.

I like the idea of threading/comment notifications. =) As the token layout diarist (xD), will comment layouts still work in threaded comments?

In 'my comments' you could have 'switch to classic view' or 'switch to threaded view'?

And same as in 'converse' I suppose? Although I'm less sure of how it would work there since those comments are strictly between you and one other diarist. Hmm!

The external Bloop thing is also a cool idea! I'm not sure I'd use it though, since I don't have my own domain.

Polls would be neat too!

i love the idea of a lifetime subscription. that would rock

I think the threaded comments is a great idea, actually. I know that I often reply to other peoples comments on entries, but they hardly ever see them unless I tell them in their diary that I've done so .

Most of the techie stuff flew right over my head, but I like the polls part .

I WOULD be interested in a set rate for a lifetime of Xtra. I'm going nowhere anytime soon, and I'd like to know it's ALWAYS going to be there. I do have a question though.. would it be $150 per diary or $150 per diarist? Would I have to pay $150 for this diary and $150 for my layout diary, or would $150 cover all of them?

♥ -

I like the idea of a lifetime subscription but I can't do $150.00. I can do $18.00 a year, though. That's a pretty steep price, but I understand the reasoning behind it.

Photo albums would be great, I think. Personally, I probably wouldn't use it, but only because I don't mind linking to my photos on DeviantArt or Facebook. But it would be extremely useful to those of us that don't really want to share much personal information by linking.

I think the lifetime subscription is an awesome idea, in theory. However, I doubt many of us could afford the $150 all in one go. I know I had to think long and hard before actually forking over the $18 for my subscription.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about the rest of the stuff, so I can't give an opinion. lol

Interesting. The only thing that makes me nervous about comment threading is that I don't want my entry comment section to become a forum, you know? Since people will now know when someone responds to a comment they had left on my page. I suppose I can deal with it

As far as the 'my comments' screen maybe you have could have two options (tick boxes or buttons or whatnot). One option will show you the comments on your entry to you and then on the other you can have a 'full comment history' which could show all comments including threaded ones? I think the Converse feature should only show comments left directly to you, none of that threaded stuff, too much of a pain in the ass .

I don't know if I'd use the photo album deal. Just because I've always uploaded my photos to photobucket for the last...million years. However if the photo albums here would make it easier for me to post them in my diary, I would check it out .

Hey Steve, you know how if you don't specify the permalink for an entry, funny characters in the entry title get converted to dashes? Can you make it so that the / character is converted to a dash too? I tends to interfere with the link otherwise.

OpenID is awesome.

Does "open source coding" mean that an iPhone OS app would be a possibility? (...if it isn't already. I'm not to bright on app-making.) I love doing slightly smaller updates from my iPod Touch, but the size of the new entry box is too big for MobileSafari. An app that auto-devisualizes diaries would be amazing.

Now I'm just talking about a hypothetical app.

The internal scripting language sounds cool. I liked when <bloop:entrytable> came out, so I look forward to a more in-depth coding system.

Polls are freaking awesome.

I'm not an Xtra person. :/

i prefer the comments the way they are. i hate the whole threaded thing at lj.

oh, and steve, another good idea, since you're talking about combining features of blogs with bloop would be the addiction of the little program that allows people to immediately post it to their facebook, myspace, or whatever site, you know that thing you see on pages like yahoo, if i have to take a picture and show you I will...oh and the addition of a rating system if some choose to use it, to where it can be thumbs up or down, and shows a number of which way the vote is going, again if i need to show you a picture, i will.

i can barely afford the $18 for xtra as it is -and i haven't had it in a while because of that issue- so i wouldn't by a "lifetime" subscription. i think maybe buying 2 or 3 years at once would be more realisitic. you can't always trust technology. with that last crash bloop had that lost everything, i almost didn't come back i was so upset. i'm not willing to trust technology enough to fork over that much money.

anyway, not a fan of the threaded comments idea. if this is something you go forward with, maybe you can have a comment option in "manage my diary" that turns off threaded comments? i keep my comments private... so people can't see what each other is saying anyway. i wouldn't have a use for threaded comments.

I'm with Will. Do all of that. I think it'll work out beautifully for bloop in the end.

Clarification on the $150 life time subscription:

* The subscription would be for a single diary only. If you want a life time subscription on two diaries, you'd have to pay for separate subscriptions as you do now.
* The subscription would be transferrable, so you could choose to transfer your subscription to another diary at no additional cost. You could also donate it to someone if you decided you were leaving Bloop.
* I'm thinking that maybe a two year subscription at $30 might be appropriate also.

The threaded comments idea:

* It would definitely be an option for the owner of the diary to disable threaded comments, I realise that threaded comments aren't everyones cup of tea!

Open source coding:

* In theory, anyone could write an application that would work with Bloop.
* Because it will be open source, people also have the opportunity to look over Bloop's security and make suggestions.

@lithium:
* Yes, comment layouts would still work as the comments would be arranged using tables which seems to be the only way to separate HTML in every browser reliably.
* I suppose that the converse feature really need not support threaded comments. But you can see how difficult this feature is primarily because of the way it must be integrated seamlessly.
* I didn't realise that forward slashes weren't converted, I'll have to look into this. There's a few bugs that I'm working on at the moment.

@Chancellor:

* Post instantly to facebook? Do you mean, when an entry is written, it automatically updates social networks?
* I understand about the thumbs up & thumbs down voting feature, but not sure where you are suggesting this would be appropriate?

ryc: no quite, i'll send you a pic of the thing. and the like/dislike feature could help bloopers by like having a "good reads" section of highly rated entries

[¤Chancellor St.Blue¤Star|0 likes] [|reply]

oh and steve, that facebook idea, more like it would post a notice, if you wanted it to, that you have wrote an entry on here, and give a link to that entry..
