Hong Kong Protests

10/04/2014

Quick Summary of Hong Kong Protests:

* Last Sunday evening, Hong Kong police fired tear gas at protestors - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGSSMS9HUR8

* This angered Hong Kongers and a lot more people came out - https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10152722219854820

* The Hong Kong leadership realized that the tear-gassing back-fired and the police retreated

* From Monday to Thursday, more and more protestors showed up at the protest sites (mainly in districts of Central and Admiralty, but also a few other districts.)  Wednesday and Thursday were national holidays and a lot of protestors showed up - https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10152722219854820

* On Friday, it was a back to work day and the protests dwindled a bit.

* On Friday, protestors were attacked by counter-protestors at the smaller protest site in the district of Mong Kwok:

• Counter-protestors led by triad members (Chinese mafia members) violently attacked protestors and took down their tents.

• Female protestors were sexually harassed and groped by attackers, according to Amnesty International and protestors.

• The police stood by and did nothing initially, according to Amnesty International and protestors.

• Protestors after being attacked or witnessing such attacks told reporters or yelled into news cameras about how they were just being peaceful there when they were attacked, while the police did nothing but watched.  Then the police ridiculously started accusing the protestors/assault victims for instigating the violence.

• At some point, police started protecting protestors from the attacks [probably because of the presence of the media and they have not choice because the protestors couldn't/didn't fight back.  It was just too obvious they were the attacked and not the attackers.]

• Police arrested attackers and many of them turned out to be Triad members.  The attackers consisted of Triad (Chinese mafia gang members) as well as some regular citizens opposed to the protests.

• Many Hong Kongers believe Beijing was behind the attacks.  (The gang attacks occurred a day after the Communist Party in China warned that “there would be chaos in Hong Kong if the protest does not end.”  Is this a coincidence?  I’ll let you decide

[Also, Russia has done the same in the past when they couldn't use their military on the smaller states, in cases like Ukraine.  They can't have use their more dominant military as the world was watching, so they paid crime organizations, or gangs to do the dirty work.  China seems to be employing the same strategy here.]
