133. Recovering Alcoholic
5-11-09
Jonathan

I was taking a walk
to the corner shop
To get me something to eat

I saw an unkempt man in front of the neighborhood packy
Walk right past him as he wanted some money
An alcoholic vagabond drinking away his life

A beautiful young lady, just leaning against a wall
Said “hey, want a good time? We can go to my place and have a ball”
I lied, told her “I’m married.” Pathetic, whoring her life away.

Walked past a group of kid
No doubt, doing things I never did
Money on little Johnny not making 21

Getting close to the shop
See a man in the dumpster, needle hanging from his arm, drinking soda pop
His next stop will be 6 feet deep

A woman wearing a sweatshirt at the counter scratching tickets with a broken nail
The clerk asking her to leave, threatening her with jail
Addicted to gambling, she was cursing as she walked right past me

Bob apologizing, asking what he could get for me
I told him not to worry, I’ll have a meatball sub and an ice tea.
He says he got stories that would make me cringe.

Everyone has stories, but they are my stories too
Thanking Bob for the sub and drink, thinking “if he only knew”
Paying for my dinner, I just smile and walk away
