Man oh man, where to start and how much to tell. (nothing juicy happened, but a lot of talking)
I already knew what I was going to wear. I wanted to wear my Redsox colared shirt with jeens. It was casual but nice. I also put on some cologne, cool water. It was a bottle a college female friend bought for me 9 years ago. I hardly use it so I still have like 5-6th of the bottle left. I sprayed some of that on. When I was waiting for my ride I first checked my email, got one from her and was a bit nervice for a split second, ”Just to let you know, I am having problems with my cell phone, so for right now our communication is restricted to seeing each other in person or email...I will see you tonight!”
I had to kill time so I played some of my favorite songs of all time. I played GNR patience, Bon Jovi’s born to be my baby, blessid union of soul’s lucky to be here and Kenny roger’s the greatest. I was going to play everclear’s unemployed boyfriend, but didn’t have time.
I got a call at 4;51, my ride was coming at 5pm. It was a former coworker who I had been trying to reach for about a month now. I was so happy to hear her voice. We worked so well together and I enjoy just talking to her. She told me she got a new position and that she is in NY for a week, she is on vacation before she starts her new position. She asked me what was going on with me. I said, well, in about 10 minutes, I am going to be going on a date. So she asked all the who when and where, and asked if I was going to pay, I said of course, she said, just checking. She said that she approved. I thanked her. We made tentative plans to go out next week, and I said, you want me to think of next week when I am worrying about tonight? She laughed. She said she would let me go, have fun and we’ll connect soon.
I only had 24 dollars so my mom lended me 30 more and then… I was off to my date.
My driver asked me who I thought was going to win the all star game. (the baseball all star game was on that night) I thought the NL but later on, said the AL has a better pitching staff. I told him I was on my way to a date and told him that I had butterflies. We got there and since it was not busy I waited outside, So what seemed like forever, standing on my feet leaning against the building, listening to people walking by and cars driving by, and checking my cell phone, I was out of my zone for some reason so I couldn’t check messages.
Eventually I heard “Jonathan?” I stood up and said HI Melinda, asked if I could give her a hug and we walked in. was led to a table she asked how long I was waiting for. She said “oh, I’m sorry” she says that a lot. It drives me nuts when people say that a lot. Lol. The waiter came over, gave his shpeel about their 112 beers on tap. I was just going to get an ice tea but she shooed him away so she could look at the beer list. She was talking about different types of beers and why she didn’t like some and liked others. I laughed and said you are talking over my head, I know nothing about beer. She said that it was ok, there are things that I talk about that are over her head. I just smiled. She ordered a watermelon beer and I got my ice tea.
I got a salad, she didn’t want an apatizer and didn’t know what she wanted yet. They have a lot of different types of burgers. I was just going to get a regular burger.
It was kinda funny. She asks me if I ever read the Boston Globe on line, I said only if someone tells me about an article to read. She said, ok, well, I brought along a quiz from today’s globe, titled how well do you know the redsox. I laughed and said, oh great, putting me on the spot. I know nothing I am going to fail. She said, you don’t know anything? Nope, well, maybe a few things. It depends on how hard these questions are. The first two questions I stopped her half way into the question because In already knew the answer. One of them was about the statue outside of fenway park, there is a statue of Ted Williams, the great RedSox player. I knew the 3rd question but didn’t know the forth or fifth question. The forth question was what is the name of the people who sell food outside of fenway park. I was like, venders? She said ya, but they have a name. I didn’t know they had a special name. She told me that she was taking a piece of letus from my salad. I told her that I wasn’t looking. She laughed. She told me about this guy who was staring at her on the train. She said it creaped her out. I said ok, would you rather (and I turned my head to the side) me look this way when I talk to you? She laughed, said I was funny. I said I hope that is a good thing she said it was.
When our food came, the place started filling up so it made it harder to hear each other. So there was a lot of “what” “can you repete that” but it was ok. Honestly, I don’t remember specific conversations. We talked about family a little, work, and sports a lot, but we were eating too.
We have a lot in common, so one thing she’ll do is, interrupt me from a story I am telling, with a story of her own about the same event or a similar situation.
We had both went to Woodstock 99. I had found this out only the night before when I was talking to her on the phone from my little cousin’s baseball game so we said that we would share stories when we saw each other. I thought it was so cool because I never met anyone else who went to woodstock99. We got into an argument about when Metallica played. I know they played Saturday night and she knows they played Friday night. I told her that I will look it up and I will prove her wrong. She had told me about some of her vice stories. The first time she drank and got drunk was when she was 14. She danced with maryjane before, including at Woodstock. I told her that I was a good boy. I never did drugs. I didn’t drink till I was 21 but I do like to gamble. I told her that I like gambling it is relaxing. Its like baseball. Layed back with moments of excitements. She asked if I ever went to Atlantic City. I had a big grin on face. She said, Oh, I am guessing you have by that smile. I said yes, for my 21 b day. Told her I went down with 200 and came home with 745. She goes “wow, I have to go with you” She asks me who I go to the cosino with. I said mostly my parents. My friends don’t have the money but don’t enjoy it anyways. She says she has gone with her friends a few times to foxwoods (consino in CT.) but finds is very smoky. I said they do have non-smoking rooms. She said she didn’t know where they were. I told her they are down stairs. The entire down stairs is non-smoking.
The bill came but she wouldn’t let me know what how much it was. She said that it is all set. I said that she couldn’t pay for it. She asked why, I said because it is a date. (I was having a male complex here, having an inner heated battle with myself, it went against everything I ever learned, having a woman pay for me on a date) She said that I changed my work schedule to fit hers and I came all this way, so she was happy that I did that for her so she is doing this for me. I said what if I left money on the table. She said it was all set. Prior to this, I did ask if she wanted ice cream, she said no thank you, she was full. It was only 7 and my ride wouldn’t be coming till 8;30 so we left and just walked around the area. I told her the next time we go out, I’ll call ahead and give them my credit card number. She said well you can use it when we go to foxwoods. I said, I have a good line of credit on there, I aint ruening it. We both laughed. We walked down to Fenway Park, I wanted to go steel home plate, but she didnt think it was a great idea. I said, but someone had done it before.. She remembered that and said it was a while ago, but not too long ago.
we were walking past a concert hall, she told me that there was a long line, neither of us knew who was playing I said, "ok, let's go ask"
she repeated what I said and than said, ok, let's go find out. We crossed the street, she asked some one, they had said acid rock. she said she heard of them, I never have, and we walked back to the other side of the street. I like that about her, she is very easy going
There is a statue of Ted Williams out side of the park. we walked over and she took my hand to put it on the statue. She says “do you know what this is?” I smiled in my child-smile saying “it’s Ted Williams’ statue”. She asked why there was also a little boy as part of the statue. I thought it had to do with the Dana Farber Cancer Hospital, since he was so big into giving his time and money into it. (as was and still is every RedSox player) but I wasnt sure, I asked her if there was a plaque somewhere. She walked around it and there was and I was write. She read me the scripture, and she started choking up, one of her best friends had breast cancer a year ago, and that was where she went for her treatment, so as we continued our walk she told me about her friend and the battle she went through then I told her about my father having cancer and his battle.
When we were walking around boston, she stops and says in a serius tone "I have a question" I have no idea what she was going to ask. I turn to face her and said, ok what?
"last night, how come field of dreams was on the music country channel? what does the movie have to do about country music?"
here I was thinking she was going to ask me if she could kiss me or something a bit more serius than that. I thought about it, and said, I have no idea. Not like there is any country music in the movie. We continued walking. She asked me what my favorite movie is. I said that I don’t have one, I have a few. My girl, Lion King, Field of dreams and hard ball. She asked me what my favorite part of field of dreams is. I said the famous selilaquey. She goes “if you build it, they will come” yep, but the entire thing because it talks about how America has been through wars and disasters but through it all, baseball has stood it’s grounds. She said she likes that part too. She never heard of Hard ball. I told her about it and how it brings out every emotion in. She told me about a movie that does brings out every emotion in her, don’t remember the movie though. She told me some of her favorite movies. One of them I never heard but Good Will Hunting was oe of her top movies. She says that she roots for him. I didn’t quite understand what she ment by that. It wasn’t like Rudy. She said that because he had so much to offer and I was rooting him to do something better with his life. I said but he wanted to be a jannettor. Yes, but he was not happy. She said that she did not like people who have so much and don’t do anything with it. I don’t like people who just sit around and do nothing. She mentioned about how I am so well educated.Sure, but my friends make fun of me for it. Oh, you have 3 degrees. She says, that’s because they are jealous of you.I don’t think they are. They have jobs that pay well. Maybe, but you are still smart.
She found steps to sit on in front of a store that was not opened. We sat and talked, more about family and religion. She thought my bro spent time in NY, I told her he went to college in Miami, came back for 2 years, went back down to tampa for 3 years. Met his now wife through our sister, After Lindsay (the friend of sis and now wife of my twin) graduated with a master’s she moved to tampa to live with my brother and a few of his friends. After a year they came back up her, bought a house, and now they live happily ever after. Talked about my father a bit more and his careers. She knows about my sister all ready through talking on the phone.
at some point she mentioned that she has family members on both sides of the family who are orthadoc. That led me to ask if she had her batz
mitzvah. and she did. I did too. I laughed, I said I had it easy, I only had to do half of it. I shared that morning’s services with my twin.
I showed her my 2004 world series ring. She wanted to hold it so I took it off, with some dificulty, and let her hold it. She asked where I got it. I told her it was my graduation gift from my parents instead of a graduate college ring. They got it from the Redsox web site.
I than showed her all my charms that are on my necklace. My RedSox charm, my Mets charm, my 34 charm, for Nolan Ryan (she goes, and david Ortiz, to which I said, and Nolan ryan), and my mazzuza and Chi. (two Jewish things.) I said, see, I really am jewish. she laughed and said, I never doubted you weren’t.
I am going to stop right here because I just got an email from her.
My email to her

Hey Jonathan,
I had a nice time too, and I did feel comfortable to a certain degree. Unfortunately I do not feel comfortable continuing this relationship any
further. Thanks for everything and good luck!
