Happy Patriot's Day

04/20/2009

About 4 A.M. on April 19th, 1775, the first shot was fired in Lexington and Concord Massachusetts, signifying the start of The American Revolutionary War.

Observances and re-enactments of these first battles of the American Revolution occur annually at Lexington Green in Lexington MA about 6AM and Concord MA, about 9AM, at the old North Bridge. They retrace the route of Paul Revere, shouting out warnings as they go along

Every year, since 1897, the Boston Marathon has been ran anually on "Patriots' day". About one millian people line the 26.2 mile marathon that starts in Hopkinton and finishes in Copley Square.

Until 1969, Patriots day was observed on April 19th. To make a 3 day week end out of it, it is observed on the 3rd Monday in April now.

The Boston RedSox, as a tradition since 1959, played a home game at Fenway Park starting at 11AM. Assuring the fans would catch the first runners as they pass through Kenmore Square.
(Of corse, provided the game is a 3 hour game)
The Red Sox record on Patriots day, is: 65-48,
Until the mid-70's, the Red Sox played a double header, which explains for the 133 games on this date.

The Patriot
Pearl Jam

And the rivers shall open for the righteous...
And the rivers shall open for the righteous...
And the rivers shall open for the righteous someday...

I was walking with my brother,
And he wondered, oh how I am.
Said what I believe in my soul
Ain't what I see with my eyes,
And there's no turning back this time.

I am a patriot, and I love my country,
Because my country is all I know.
Wanna be with my family,
People who understand me.
I got no place else to go.

I was walking with my girlfriend.
She looked so fine, I said
"Baby, what's on your mind?"
Said I want to run like the lions
Released from their cages...
Released from the rages
Burning in my soul tonight.

I am a patriot, and I love my country,
Because my country is all I know.

And I ain't no communist,
And I ain't no socialist,
And I ain't no capitalist,
And I ain't no imperialist,
And I ain't no democrat,
Sure ain't no republican either,
I only know one party,
And that is freedom.
I am...I am...I am...

I am a patriot, and I love my country,
Because my country is all I know.

And the rivers shall open for the righteous,
And the rivers shall open for the righteous,
And the rivers shall open for the righteous someday...
Someday...someday...

My friend Rebbecca is from Lexington and she was telling me all about how big of a holiday this is in the Boston area! How cool.

I was at the Marathon today. I've been here three years, and this is the first time I've gotten to see it. I got some great pictures - I think the best ones were of the wheelchairs - such determination! I was up at the Cleveland Circle turn, then my boyfriend and I got on a train, got off at Kenmore and managed to get sucked into the Red Sox crowd as they were letting out of Fenway. Loooooong day. But awesome.
