life and history repeat.

01/17/2014

The thing about life is, everyone lives theirs differently. Whether they’re living it for themselves or for someone else or just because they have to - everyone lives their lives differently. And although the way a person lives their life may seem odd or foreign or just plain dumb, it’s their life to live. No one else knows what they’ve been through. No one else knows what goes on inside their head - their heart. Or maybe someone does, but not really. That someone they confided in only knows the things they’re being told. They don’t know about the hidden stack of cash in a kitchen drawer or the nights she spent all night crying or the track marks found between toes. No one really knows another person, because it’s their life and they live it their way.

The thing about people is, they choose to care - to love - these people with lives so different from their own. They make friends, form relationships, give a bit of themselves to every person they have ever cared about. It’s what makes us human. We see the girl who pretends she’s super confidant, but underneath she’s nothing but insecurity. We see the boy who’s too angry at the world to give the world a chance. We see the girl who hides in her room, behind computers and work and rules from “above,” lose herself because she refuses to stand up for herself. We see the girl who fell hopelessly in love with a boy who just used her love, because he knew she’d let him. Knew that she loved him and cared for so much, that she would’ve moved mountains if he asked. We see the boy who is confidant and intelligent and caring, hide behind a persona that was created for him by those around him. We see him become that person, because that’s who he’s convinced himself he is. And we see him get hurt time-and-time again. We see the boy and the girl get back together with exes who don’t deserve them because they hate being alone, and they’d rather take shitty back than have nothing at all. We see them everyday, and all we want to do is reach in and fix everything that seems broken. We want to shake them and point them in the “right” direction, because we know that’s where they’ll find their happiness. We want to do these things, because we love them. But, just because we love someone - sometimes more than we loves ourselves - doesn’t mean we have the right to tell them what to do or where to go or who they should love. It’s their life, and it’s their choices that make their lives theirs.
