The dentist

01/19/2010

Please excuse the fact that there is no layout on this entry but first of all there are no new layouts to be found and second of all I am in no mood to search (by the by would everyone look at my faves and tell me if there are any layout diaries that I've missed please).

WARNING THE REST OF THIS ENTRY HAS DETAILS ABOUT DENTAL WORK IF YOU HAVE A WEAK STOMACH YOU'D BE BETTER OFF SKIPPING THIS ENTRY!!!!

Anyway...as most of you know my dentist appointment was today and let me tell you it was HELL!!!!!!! First of all they did the cleaning I was talking about, the tech was REALLY nice and tried very hard to keep me from being nervous about it by telling me that it shouldn't hurt...but hurt it did!!! It wouldn't have been so bad but she had to use this metal pick thing to scrape the bad stuff off my teeth and she kept catching my gums with it...I'm sure you can imagine the rest not to mention the fact that I bled horribly. So they did that and took me straight from there to the tech room where they do all the dental work. They did my entire right side today starting with the bottom in all I ended up getting 15 shots...no I am NOT exaggerating. The bottom went well and the original four injections were enough, but when they did the top they'd only gotten half way through before the medication wore off and I started feeling EVERYTHING!!! So after realizing that my top jaw wasn't holding the Novocaine as well they had to double the dose to keep me numb. In all they did 11 fillings 6 on bottom and 5 on top...thankfully they were able to use clear enamel fillings because my cavities are white so at least I don't have a silver mouth now.

The worst part of the whole thing was the clamps they had to use. Their these little metal clamp contraptions that they shove between your teeth to hold the enamel filling onto the tooth then in order to keep the teeth separated they put a wooden peg in between the clamp and the adjoining tooth both of which dig into the gum. Let me make something perfectly clear my teeth were numb, my cheek was numb, even my eye was a little numb when they did the top but for some odd reason I could feel those clamps and pegs digging into my gums just as if there was no medication to speak of.

Long story short I was in that dentists chair for over four hours...my appointment started at 8 am and I didn't leave the office until after one o'clock in the afternoon!!!! The only good thing I can say about the whole ordeal is that the dentist and techs were REALLY kind. The dentist would not continue on the second jaw until I had assured him that I was okay with it and then told me how proud he was of me for taking it all as well as I did. He never asked question either, when I told his nurse that the medication had worn off he came straight in and administered the shots..a lot of dentists would have wanted to poke around to see if you really were telling the truth you know?

After the procedure I went to the front desk, the dentist gave me a scrip for Tylenol 3 and they set up my next appointment. The girl at the front desk offered me an appointment for tomorrow but I turned her down flat...theres no way in hell I'd be able to go through that again so soon after going through what I did today. So instead she gave me an appointment for Monday at 10 am...if all goes well they will complete all the fillings on my left side then and I'll be done. I don't know that I'd be able to face three appointments!!!! Anyway thats all I wanted to talk about, for now I'm going to go rest because I'm still hurting A LOT!! I'll write again soon I'm sure until then as usual I'm outtie...caio and Blessed Be!

Wow.. good job! I'm in a similar situation. I have a ton of cavities - but I don't have dental insurance and we have to pay for it all out of pocket [EXPENSIVE!] so... I wish I could get all of mine done in 2 or 3 appointments =\ I had to have root canals done and man, my jaw hurt sooo bad afterwards from all the pulling and pushing - and those STUPID clamps are AWFUL! They had to numb me extra just for those!

RYC: Yes! I thought that the cleaning was worth than having a filling done. At least for the fillings you're numb when they're scraping and crap! Eeeek. I hate the dentist & that's partly why my teeth are the way they are ;; also not having dental insurance for many years. I finally went in because I was in sooo much pain.. I had an impacted wisdom tooth that was putting pressure on a molar next to it, which happened to have an exposed nerve. I had to pay almost $600 to have them both pulled. I was miserable. It wasn't too bad afterward, but I still have 3 more wisdom teeth that need to come out lol
