Ten Ways To be A great person

07/25/2009

1. Speak to people. There is nothing as nice as a cheerful word of greeting.

2. Smile at people. It takes 72 muscles to frown, but only 14 to smile!

3. Call people by name. The sweetest music to anyone's ear is the sound of his or her own name.

4. Be friendly and helpful if you would like to have friends.

5. Be cordial. Speak and act as if everything you do were a real pleasure.

6. Be genuinely interested in people. You can like everyone if you try.

7. Be generous with praise and cautious with criticism. Praise will win out when it comes to gaining friends.

8. Be considerate of the feelings of others. It will be appreciated.

9. Be thoughtful of the opinions of others. People love their opinions as they do their own children; calling them ugly won't get you anything but anger.

10. Be alert to give service. What counts most in life is what we do for others!

I really really like this.
It's so true, at least to me it is.(: [BrandiLovesCJ] [reply]

There are only about 20 muscles in the face in total and not all 20 of those would be used to frown OR smile, but I appreciate the sentiment. xD

hahahahaha i always had a feeling that was a lie [valerieeeeeStar] [reply]

Haha - brilliant, yo! Teresa can give us the real low-down on face muscles. Surely, too, it must depend on the type of smile or frown you're doing. I can do a little smile which doesn't ache my face, but if I do a huge one, my poor cheeks ache! And, like, you can have a slight frown of concentration, or a huge big scowl!

this is too cliche for me. i don't agree with a lot of it, actually. [valerieeeeeStar] [reply]

Number 9 does not make sense, yo. Calling someone ugly has nothing to do with their opinions. It's just a personal insult, and quite different from disagreeing with them on an opinion. I'm not sure to what extent people really do love their opinions as much as their own children. I'm happy for people to disagree with my opinions. It's jolly boring when people agree all the time.

And I'm pretty sure I cannot genuinely like everyone if I try. I'd actually have no desire to try. Why should I try to like Hitler, for instance? If someone was molesting a kid, I'd have no interest in trying to like the molestor - I'd be more interested in protecting the kid.

It is an interesting list - it assumes that everyone is totally self absorbed (loving the sound of their own name, loving their own opinions as babies) and that the way to be a great person is to cater to their self absorption. I guess I'd challenge the logic behind that, yo! Perhaps it's more a list about how to be a popular person. Did you make it up yourself, or did you get it from somewhere?

I think it means calling the opinion 'ugly'... not the person him/herself. xD Or at least that's how I interpreted it when I first read it.

lol this sounds a lot like "ten ways to be a smug and annoyingly perfect git with zero personality who people secretly want to stab in their fake goody-two-shoes face!" [all.is.vanityStar] [reply]

#11: Be me. [kein mitleidStar] [reply]

This reminds me of the book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Same basic concept. [Chloe_Lane] [reply]
