Dozens Walk Past Dying Hero Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax On New York Sidewalk

Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax was stabbed several times in the chest while saving a woman from a knife-wielding attacker. Then he bled to death while dozens of people walked by -- one stopping to snap a picture of the dying man with his cameraphone before leaving the scene.

Tale-Yax, 31, a homeless Guatemalan immigrant, collapsed at 144th Street and 88th Road in Jamaica, Queens, while in pursuit of the woman's attacker around 5:40 a.m. on April 18. He was pronounced dead by medical workers who responded to a 911 call around 7:20 a.m. But surveillance video obtained the New York Post, which the New York Times got the NYPD to confirm is genuine, shows that plenty of people saw Tale-Yax lying there in his death throes and did nothing.

The police said they were looking for the man who was in the altercation with the woman. He was described as 5-foot-6, with a medium build, wearing a green short-sleeved shirt and a green hat.

The police were not sure if the woman knew what happened to Mr. Tale-Yax, but they said it was possible she knew the suspect. They are waiting for her or a third party to come forward with more information.

NOTE: If you click on the link there is a surveillance video where you can see people walking past the poor man while he's bleeding to death on the sidewalk. People make me sick.

that is...sick.

some people are fucking disgusting.

that poor man [Minda Hey Hey™Star] [reply]

The callousness of people never ceases to disgust and awe me. What the hell happened to people that we've become SO jaded and complacent as a society that we can't even stop to help a dying man on the street.

People make me fucking sick. [Music God Of BloopStar] [reply]

wtf? ppl r sick... what a sad sad world this is when no one would help i mean hello! if it was me i would like someone to pick up thier cells and call 911 for me [*~Amber~*] [reply]

I hope karma comes back to bite those people in the behind. WTF is going on with people? They disgust me.

That poor man.... [Aspiring Boxer] [reply]

holy nuts...seriously? Did they just not give a damn? [ObsidianDreamer] [reply]

That's so pathetic. People are so self-absorbed these days. hell I'm surprised someone didn't try to rob him while he was laying there. [Tam I AmStar] [reply]

That is fucking disgraceful. [Aly] [reply]

That is crazy, it really doesn't surprise me though. [.xoxo] [reply]

wow.. im so shocked! [FEiSTY♥MAMAStar] [reply]

Photobucketwow...i mean, it only takes a few seconds to call 911, it's not like you have to stick around, ya know? what is wrong with our country?! sigh.hugs [alex's momma] [reply]

I not only would have called 911 but I would have waited with him until they showed up. No one should die alone like that. [Greta GarbageStar] [reply]

Photobucketi totally agree. and would do the same. but the fact that NO ONE called AT ALL...it's just astounding. sigh. it's not like it's hard to dial 9-1-1. sorry if that came across callous. hugs [alex's momma] [reply]

oh no it didn't! Sorry to make it sound like I thought it sounded callous. I was just saying what I would do if I were to come across him. I'm glad that you'd do the same as I would. I mean, I would want someone to help me if I ever needed it, you know? People don't understand that....do onto others as you would have others do onto you. I guess they want people to ignore them and let them die if it was them. [Greta GarbageStar] [reply]

This always happens. There are so many stories like this. People get scared and don't step in.
[Estella the ElderStar] [reply]

hmm - just wondering what would they be scared of... to step in? (just curious cuz i didnt think of that one lol) [*~Amber~*] [reply]

Scared of being hurt. Scared of the implications of stepping in to something that has involved violence and criminal behaviour. Not knowing exactly what they are getting involved in, whether they will be attacked themselves, whether they'll be accused themselves, etc.
[Estella the ElderStar] [reply]

If I saw someone laying on the side of the street dying, I'd have no choice but to call 911... I wouldn't be able to walk away and not do it... [SteveStar] [reply]

Although if there were loads of people around, you'd probably assume someone else had already called 911, yo. Like, that is how it often works. Like that huge fire in that football match years ago - the fire brigade only heard about it from seeing it on TV. No one called 999 because everyone assumed that someone else had already done so. People act very oddly in crowds.
[Estella the ElderStar] [reply]

wow, i cant fucking believe that, i hate people, theyre so incredibly disgusting, i wish something would crash into the planet and just kill the whole lot of us. [▫▪KikiStar] [reply]

Not a single person bothered to call 911 and help this man? Humanity sickens me. The guy who stopped to take a picture really sickens me! [reply]

sick world we live in. people just don't give a shit about other people anymore. no fucking hearts. Karma is a bitch though. [Greta GarbageStar] [reply]

my question is how do they go to the next day? like how can you just walk away knowing you didn't even try to help someone, when that person died helping someone else? how do you look at your self in the mirror and feel ok with who you are? when your life becomes too important to stop and help someone you are not worth much to this world.

I saw this on the news it is so horrible, but I can't help but wonder if people thought he was just a drunk or something? It makes me kind of wonder if this is because people are used to seeing more extreme stuff in the media so they really didn't realize how hurt this guy was. It is just sad all around. [Butterflys don't lie] [reply]

That was so disgusting and disturbing.

I agree with Music God. People just don't care anymore and are so involved with themselves that they forget about showing concern for other people.

I hate to go this way, but around here in Grand Haven, it would have been the same way, unless you were a white person that was fashionable.
Any other nationality or any signs of being homeless and you would have been laying there for days around here.
Maybe someone would move you to the side of the street, but that would be about it.

I found this because my friend has linked to it on FB and one of her friends had commented that "they probably just thought he was a drunk" and that "hey, I'll go around waking up every homeless person I see and we'll see how many I piss off before I find the one that got stabbed." Which is ridiculous.

The thing is, the man was stabbed multiple times. Whether or not he looked like he was passed out drunk there SURELY should have been blood. *sigh* [Beautiful LiesStar] [reply]

That's awful. How hard is it to grab your phone and at LEAST call 911? [Pink.Polka.Dots] [reply]

that poor guy. i can't believe that one man actually lifted him up, saw the blood, and still just walked away. and what is up with that one guy taking a fucking picture of him lying there dead? i really wonder about people. [WishingAndHoping] [reply]

people are disgusting these days. I'm very disappointed. [Khoquetishღ] [reply]

This horrifies me. I can't believe people can be so heartless. [»Scarlett's Mommy«] [reply]

it doesn't really surprise me that people just ignored him and kept walking. what does surprise me is that some asshole took a photo rather than call for help. that person is the sickest mother fucker out of the lot of them. [& skull.Star] [reply]

Well, psychologically speaking, people have a tendency to believe that someone else, in a crowd, will take care of a problem. It is the assumption that, "even if I don't do it, someone else will." It's sad, but it's been proven in so many case studies it's not even funny. We, as humans, are horrendously selfish. [Emily the StrangeStar] [reply]

It's the "passerby effect", or something like that. I remember reading about a famous case in NYC in the 70's. A woman, Kitty something, was raped and stabbed while an apartment building full of people looked on. When interviewed, most of the residents said that they didn't call because they thought someone else would, and they didn't want to clog the lines.
It's depressing, but it happens all too often.

Bystander Effect is how I know it by. I haven't watched the actual video, I don't really want to watch someone as they die. So it would be nice to hear from someone who has watched. The Bystander Effect argues that the more people that are around, the less likely someone is to help. I'm not that shocked by it either. But I'm going into Social Psychology and read about this type of thing and research on it. [Return-To-Sender&Psi] [reply]

Kitty Genovese. That story is horrifying!
[lithium layouts.Star] [reply]

I remember studying the original case in social psychology a few years back. to this day that "kitty genovese" case disturbs me to this day. What more is that people are still doing the same thing; thinking that someone else will take care of it. Hence the "bystander effect" [Come.Clarity.85] [reply]

people are so sick & ridiculous. [kstaff. //Star] [reply]

Very sad, and I can't help but think that if I told someone this story they would probably feel it's far fetched. The explanations in comments before mine seem more likely than all of the people in the video being self absorbed enough to ignore a dying man... [SteveStar] [reply]

჻ೋ჻ That's horrible!! ჻ೋ჻ [AshaliciousStar] [reply]

This makes me want to puke. Seriously, this poor man is bleeding to death and people can just..walk on by? I feel guilty if I pass a person broke down on the side of the road (granted I live in a tiny, rural county, but still..), and I could NEVER leave someone like that lying there. Ever.

what kind of people do we live among? [broke and famousStar] [reply]

holy fuck.

what the hell?

that would be New York for you I guess. [beautiful.nightmareStar] [reply]

Ok, not all new yorkers are like that....that'd be like me saying "All diarists who have a blue elephant in their comments curse like sailors." Just because you do doesn't mean anyone else does. [Emily the StrangeStar] [reply]

uh, ok. [beautiful.nightmareStar] [reply]

I wasn't making an attack against New Yorkers. All I said was "That's New York for you". It's pretty well-known that New York has a lot of crime and such. That's all I meant. Excuse me if I stepped on toes but I also don't see the need for you to personally attack me. [beautiful.nightmareStar] [reply]

How can that not be against New Yorkers when you say "That's New York for you?" Are you assuming the foliage is to blame? The pollution? No, you're saying it against the people. There's a lot more to New York than just the City, and people who don't live there don't know that. It's easy to just say "Oh, well, New York has a lot of crime, so that's New York for you" Instead of thinking "Well, it is a major tourist city and not only nice people travel, so not all crime that occurs in New York is committed by New Yorkers." I'm a New Yorker. I've never committed a crime, I've never been victim of a crime, and I don't know any one who has.

It's all about the number of people in the space we have. It's bound to happen just because of the sheer number of people we have in NYC. But not all New Yorkers are like that.

And since "that's New York for you", I feel no problem in "personally attacking" you since you must expect it of me. ^_^ [Emily the StrangeStar] [reply]
