Home No More

06/16/2011

Of all the places
First memories
And pesonal spaces
How changed it is, without the trappings

I push the heavy front door aside
It never seemed shut
No, instead, always swung wide
The invite now empty
As the hall closet and the vacant kitchen

My shoes sound loud on barren floors
The house echos and creaks
As I open each bedroom's door
I look out into the back yard
What was my view

I try and catalog each memory
Hoping and praying none will flee
Where mother would sit at kitchen window
Watching for us...it seems so long ago.

And my daddy,
'...master of none',He'd say,
As he held court and fixed this and with a few words, made right
Revelry in the morning and taps at night

The wicker swing where wisdom was espoused
Creaking chain, in pendulum, marks yet the time.
That is where I now sit and cry.

For today is the last day
That I can call this, My Home
I sign the papers and let go the keys
Trying with all my might to bottle in what I feel

"Thank you!", they say.
I turn and walk away
They wave and close the door
And now, this is my home, no more.
