Not Just a Story from Long Ago

08/01/2014

After the apparent miracles and powerful hand of God in saving the Israelites (plagues against the Egyptians and opening up the Red Sea to flee the Egyptian army)…
“He saved them from the hand of the foe; from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them…. Then they believed his promises and sang his praise. But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his plan to unfold. In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wilderness they put God to the test. So he gave them what they asked for , but sent a wasting disease among them.” Psalm 106: 10 – 15

This is not just the story from long ago of the ancient Israelites. I have this tendency and I need to get away from this. God has done amazing things that I have tendency to forget. His rescue of my sister Priscilla’s situation with the city licenses that could have doomed her business before it even began. His rescue of my kidney situation earlier this year. His rescue of my medical troubles in 2003 to 2004. His rescue of my many financial troubles in the past 10 years….

I, like the ancient Israelites, still kinda grumbled (inside me) and “they gave in to their craving”. They looked at the worldly nations around them (such as Egypt) and they said, “Why don’t we have that?” They didn’t have that YET because of their lack of faith.

I have to be careful to get away from this tendency. I need to get away from this craving for what the world has around me and the cravings and sinful temptations. The thing is, when I get the faith (like Jesus had), God has something way better that the world around me.

The end of the quote from Psalms, “So he gave them what they asked for, but sent a wasting disease among them.” Is a warning for me. I must keep away from ending up here. (The Israelites in the desert had manna to eat, but they craved for meat that the people in the worldly nations get to have. A whole lot of quail showed up for them to eat. Many died of disease.)

I need to focus on doing everything to get into the Promised Land. I need to muster up the faith necessary to get into the Promised Land.
