Was your first time at Bloop confusing?

07/09/2009

Hello Bloopers,

One problem we've always had is people coming to Bloop and leaving because they don't understand how it works.

How was your first time using Bloop? Was there anything in particular you found confusing?

I have often wondered if moving the submit button from the top of the interfaces to the bottom would make it easier for newcomers.

Leave your thoughts!

Steve.

Bloop was a little confusing for me when I came, but I am stubborn and worked it out. The layout thing confused me the most, but I just commented you and you helped me out

the only thing ive notice people asking about is layouts and how to get them and add them to their diary. when i first came here i came from TOD so i kinda new how a diary site was set up, i think its pretty easy to understand here though, the table on the right hand side is pretty easy to understand i think.

OH, YES, BUT I WROTE LOTS OF ENTRIES ASKING QUESTIONS AND BLOOPERS ANSWERED, YO! MOSTLY BOTTOM, IN FACT. SHE WAS VERY INFORMATIVE.

Not at all. it was the only site I found that I understood! Places like LJ still confuse me! I used to use Open Diary before Bloop and it's quite similar so I got used to it really quick.

tbh, I didnt find bloop confusing at all. I was use to TOD though, and it took a bit of getting use to. I found the layouts harder to use to start with.... I found the "manage my diary" section hard to use to start with because bloop has so many features (Which are awesome by the way) I soon got use to it though.
...bottom line..
Bloop is awesome!

WOW I don't remember my first time at Bloop It was so long ago! I came here from FOD with the Great FOD Influx of 2002 (lol) so I do remember I found Bloop similar and pretty easy to navigate at the time.

Personally I wouldn't want the submit button moved to the bottom because then it is easier to accidentally hit it when you are trying to click something else, especially since us OB's (original Bloopers ) are so used to it, we will be griping about it nonstop and you will get so tired of it, Steve! Just my opinion!

I don't personally use the circles anymore myself, and I just clicked over to notice no one else does much anymore, either! There are no entries in the newbies section! Maybe if we could fill that in with some tips for newcomers, or add to the BloopDiaryBasics diary, newbies would feel more welcome?

DARWINSIM, yo! If they're too stupid to figure it out, they ain't meant to be here!!! hahaha. I can't say that Bloop was in the least bit confusing when I first arrived!

Hmm, I don't think I've ever found it confusing... I've always liked the structure and the setup and everything... I think some people are impatient and that's why they say Bloop is confusing. They are too impatient to actually LOOK for the thing they can't find... like, if they can't find the "submit" button for example, they immediately get confused, rather than just LOOK for the button. But that's just my opinion. I love Bloop as it is, and if I do have a question, I ask my fellow Bloopers and they usually help. That's it.

Have a nice day!

Bloop was easy for me from the beginning. The menu on the right makes it pretty easy to get to wherever you need.

[June BrideStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I agree with a few others. Layouts were the only thing that really confused me at the beginning. Most everything else was pretty straight forward and self-explanatory.

I found the layout issues confusing but everyone was available to help. It didn't take long for me to get hooked

What Life is All About i have been on bloop so long that idk if it was confusing. i do know that i never understood why have faves and friends, if they are our faves wouldnt make them our friends? idk but that is the only thing i could think of.

my first time at bloop was a looong time ago but i don't remember it being too confusing. the only thing i had trouble with was layouts and such so that's not a big deal. i don't think the submit button being at the top is too confusing but maybe i am just used to it.

[The Mrs. {+1}Star|0 likes] [|reply]

What confused me the most was getting layouts to work (hence why I set about learning to make them!) but apart from that, I don't really remember...I think it was easy enough. But I was here very early on so it was an earlier version of bloop as well. I'd say since most people are saying either no it isn't confusing or, its been so long since I came I don't remember if its confusing I'd take that as a pretty good indicator that it isn't confusing. Is this comment confusing?!

[eye candy [designs]Star|0 likes] [|reply]

my first time on bloop was YEARS ago. I've had so many diaries on here since then! I don't even remeber how it was the first time around, but it wasn't too bad when i came back earlier this year.

[CouldBeYou-AgainStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I came from TOD so I had an idea of how this sort of thing worked. Maybe you should somehow emphasise for new users the fact that they can post an entry, or raise a ticket - our community is always more than willing to help.

Ha! I always thought bloop was one of (if not the ONLY) user friendly websites. I've always found it so easy to use compared to other sites. It's all pretty self-explanitory if you ask me!

[K♥CrownStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I thought bloop was very user friendly. It's not like LJ, which I have not fully figured out yet! I was a refuge from TOD, so I was somewhat familiar with online diary sites.

[mrs mandy mooStar|0 likes] [|reply]

i never found bloop confusing. The only thing I didnt understand were layouts... I still kinda dont so I cant make them all fancy, but I dont mind. I just request people to make them for me.

[*;shimmerStar|0 likes] [|reply]

It was a while ago so it's not so fresh in my memory but I don't remember having any confusion about how Bloop works.

I came from FOD, so in my mind it was like FOD only the everything that was supposed to be on the left was on the right. lol And some names were different... but it was pretty easier to figure out.

Personaly I think the submit button makes perfect sense on the bottom and has no business being on top! I suppose if you want to see if it makes any difference you could put it both on top and on the bottom though? Like same emails have it...

~

[internationalStar|0 likes] [|reply]

No, people just have to read. If they can't figure it out they should stay at FOD

just being snarky =P A lot of sites I've used put the submit button at the top OR the bottom.

[Hidden DepthsStar|0 likes] [|reply]

When I first came to Bloop I had never been on a 'diary site' before... I came on because you told me to while at KHS! haha!

I still find the 'manage my diary' a little hard to find things in - even though I know that they are there somewhere. So somebody that is browsing the 'settings' may find it hard to realise what some of the items are!

It wasn't confusing for me because I had Ashley to teach me. And she had already been using it for like a year before.

I was lucky when I came to Bloop, because a friend here introduced me to it. She talked me through just about everything, and made everything a lot easier.
The only thing I could really think could help newbies, is a guide. Maybe a diary (like bloopbasics), or maybe a diarist. Kind of like when you start a new school, and you've got the guide to help you with everything.
Maybe set up a community diary where you have Bloop Guides, diarists who sign up to help new people. Assign them to new members, and have them show the newbs the ropes.
I know there are better ways to describe the idea, but I really can't think of anything.

Bloop was never confusing to me. But like others I came from TOD so I kinda knew how it worked. I think all the other diary sites are complicated. Bloop is very user friendly in my opinion.

[already goneღStar|0 likes] [|reply]

i actually found it alright. It was a bit intimidating at first but once i got the hang of it i was fine! i like the idea of a guide? Or maybe even mentors? You could have a diary like the format of dear anon where questions are put forward to the bloop population in general. xx

I SHALL WRITE A HELPFUL COMMENT WHERE I OUTLINE THE CONFUSING BITS.

BLOOP XTRA TRIAL. FIRST I HAD NO IDEA WHY I HAD IT. I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE POINT OF 'WHO'S VIEWED IT', SO I ASKED, AND PEOPLE SAID THAT IT WAS FOR PEOPLE TO GET ALL WEIRD AND ACCUSE NON-COMMENTERS OF STALKING THEM WITH EVIL INTENTIONS.

ALSO, IT SAID IT WAS FOR 3 DAYS, BUT IT LASTED LONGER. SO I WROTE ENTRIES ASKING WHY I STILL HAD IT AND PEOPLE TOLD ME IT LASTED 7 DAYS. THIS MADE NO SENSE TO ME - IT SHOULD HAVE SAID IT WAS FOR 7 DAYS. THEN IT ENDED UP LASTING A MONTH, BECAUSE OF SOME BUG, SO THAT WAS VERY CONFUSING.

IT WAS ALSO CONFUSING WHEN I GOT A THING SAYING I HAD ONE NEW MESSAGE, BUT WHEN I CLICKED ON MY MESSAGES THERE WERE NO NEW ONES. THE WHOLE 'FILTERED' FILE WASN'T IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS TO ME. I'D NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING - AND STILL DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND THE POINT, BECAUSE FILTERED OR NOT, YOU STILL RECEIVE THE MESSAGE, AND HAVE TO EITHER READ IT OR DELETE IT FOR IT TO STOP SAYING YOU HAVE ONE NEW MESSAGE.

TO BE HONEST, THOUGH, I THINK PEOPLE WHO LEAVE BLOOP BECAUSE THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW IT WORKS WILL DO THE SAME AT ANY SITE. IT'S BECAUSE YOU AIM THE SITE AT TEENAGERS, AND TEENAGERS ARE FLIGHTY AND THEY EASILY GIVE UP, YO!

i want to know what "the points" you earn go towards? Like when you leave a welcome note on someone elses page-- i use open diary more because i've been with them for 2 years.. but im gradually writing in here often too.

and i want to know how you get a "layout" in your comment field... to automatically pop up everytime i go to leave a comment

[~The New Mrs.|0 likes] [|reply]

navigating bloop is very easy and simple. I think most people get frustrated with HTML

[Ariel ♥Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Yes it was very confusing, firstly as the system didn't trust me (which when you get up an account you are not told about at all) I couldn't view the diaries I wanted to, e.g friends I have on here in real life.
Navigation is difficult, especially in areas where you edit your profile, friends lists etc, even now I find it difficult to do some things and spend quite a lot of time searching for the option I need.
The importance of comments, when I joined I would click on different diaries to see if I could read them, on nearly all the ones I could read after clicking their entry and then leaving it, I would receive abusive comments from the owner of the diary (which was a common experience of a few of my friends on here). There is very little written advice on what to do about people like these, so until they get bored your only option is to just delete the comments, which gets very old.
I think a good idea for new members would be the first time they are on here there are pop ups that say like click here, then you practice sending a ticket, comment, message, posting a forum topic etc. Being a retard, I way needed some help!

I'm with Theresa, I came from TOD and knew how this worked. The only thing I had to figure out was the layouts, but it wasn't confusing. I just asked questions and I had everything figured out the same day I joined,

It was a little confusing, but my friend has a diary on here, and helped me get through it.

[aleah10509|0 likes] [|reply]

bloop was very confusing when i first came here from teenopendiary. i couldn't figure out how to set entry layouts and whatnot to save my life. it's set up so much different than the sites I was used to using.

maybe making a beginner users guide and linking it from the front page would be helpful.

[Home Again|0 likes] [|reply]

i didn't find it very confusing at all.

out of every diary site i've visited, i've found this one the best and most user friendly.

[Minda Hey Hey™Star|0 likes] [|reply]

I never had a problem at all. I thought it was rather easy from the beginning.

[stickbug7Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Out of all the diary sites I've used, bloop is probably the least confusing, with LJ being the most confusing.
Are cookies broken? I'm having trouble with loading pages and staying logged in at the moment, might be my browser config though.

Customizing my diary was confusing at first... other than that, the layout is pretty user friendly.

[Mommy.ArmyWife|0 likes] [|reply]

oh god it was so long ago for me i'm not so sure. i guess using layouts was a bit confusing from what i remember, but the site now is so straight forward i don't really get how anyone could be confused.

don't move the button, it's fine where it is.

[& skull.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

bloop was never confusing for me because it was very similar to OD. the html was a little different, but i caught on quickly there after

There is little things that might have been confusing to me.

[love always.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

I found this very simple. I didn't understand how other sites formed communities. LJ and OD were too clique-y for my liking. I figured this site out with only one Blooper's help. I knew her IRL and she's not on the site anymore.

I think it's all pretty intuitive. But I've taught myself things from the piano to PHP, so I guess I find somewhat difficult things fairly simple.

[carias|0 likes] [|reply]

I'm not going to lie, it was confusing to me. I had previously had a Xanga, then moved to LiveJournal, then here. The layout was the hardest part. I worked my way through it. I still don't know what all the buttons do, but as long as I know bold, italic, underline, and strike, I'm good.

[Lady Erienne|0 likes] [|reply]

I personally find the navigation to be incredibly frustrating. It feels as though the home page is impossible to get to and the new entry link was hidden. I'm not particularly a fan of the right navigation bar as it has way too much in it and the design isn't friendly to me.
One thing I was disappointed about when I wanted to customize my journal was that I couldn't upload a style sheet to customize it.

When i started yes but if you GIVE it time and work with it you Learn

[~Sheeniki~|0 likes] [|reply]

I've been here for awhile and I'm still confused, haha. I just don't like how complicated it is for me to get the layouts on my diary. I just can't do it, even though people have explained it to me.

[cherrydarling|0 likes] [|reply]

Oh wow.... it was so long ago that I don't remember much really. Just that it was easier to use than OD. And much more colorful back in the day too. heh
