Planned changes to the forums

09/17/2009

Hello Bloopers,

I'd like to change the way the forums work.

At the moment if you reply to someone, your reply appears beneath their post. I want to alter the way a thread views so that each page stays the same, by adding the newest post to the end of the thread.

I could probably leave an option so that people can view it the way it is right now too.

Thoughts please? Discuss! I created the threaded comments for a reason!

Steve.

PS. If someone wants to explain this better than I have, please do so!

So, if we were to reply to a specific post, our reply would post at the end of the entire forum rather than underneath the specific persons post? That doesn't make sense to me, at all, so I hope I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, lol. It would be odd to go into a forum and read what everyone has posted on the original subject and then to get to pages full of nonsense because they're random replies to other peoples posts.... yeah, I think I'm not understanding this correctly, haha.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. However, if a post is a reply to another post, it would signal it at the top of the post with a link to the original post.

If you bookmark a thread, you'll bookmark exactly what you see. If you come back in a week, what you bookmarked won't have changed.

I'm with you, that's my understanding D: which would kinda be nonsensical, and weird.

Perhaps I'll make it optional then. lol

What if, like, when you went to reply to a post, it went to the end of the forum, but it had a partial quote from the post you're replying to AND a link, so people don't have to necessarily go back 5 pages to read the other post and then go read the reply, but instead get an idea of the previous post. Am i making sense? lol

Yes..... you are making sense.. lol.... although that's getting rather complicated

I vote "no". It doesn't make sense to do that and would mess with the flow of the forums.

Oh god, that would be wonderful.

I would view it so the newest post shows up at the bottom of the page.

I figured at least one person would like the idea!

I also believe that displaying the forums in this way influences the way a discussion proceeds.

For example, the current viewing style allows people to all too easily have arguments and lose focus on the topic at hand. By displaying posts from oldest to newest, the arguments are drowned out in active threads.

That is certainly true... but I do agree that it would interrupt the flow of normal forum, er, flow. xD

I DISAGREE WITH YOUR REASONING. THE WAY YOU ARE SUGGESTING IT WILL BRING ALL THE ARGUMENTS TO THE TOP. AT THE MOMENT THEY JUST STAY LOCALISED TO WHERE THEY ARE, AND CAN MUCH MORE EASILY BE IGNORED. I USE FORUMS WHICH ARE LIKE WHAT YOU ARE PROPOSING, AND IT'S SO MUCH EASIER TO LOSE TRACK OF WHAT THE ACTUAL THREAD IS ABOUT!

HOWEVER, HUMAN NATURE IS WHAT IT IS, AND HOWEVER YOU ORGANISE THE FORUMS, PEOPLE WILL RUSH TO THE DRAMA AND JOIN IN.

I would like to see in posts WHAT specific post was being replied to - irrespective of the layout.

I prefer it this way... adding to the end of the thread, rather than chopping all over the place.

An in-thread option to quote a post would be a perfect idea if you plan to change the layout of the threads. Actually, it would've been a great idea anyway. It would make any sort of layout a bit more user friendly, so instead of copying+pasting whatever you want quoted, then coding it yourself, etc etc, there's a one-touch solution, like a lot of other forums have.

gonna have to vote no on that, it defeats the purpose of replying to a specific post in the thread, maybe give them some kinda marker that denotes its a reply to a persons specific post instead of the general thread

Thats how the fourms work at the other site i visit..

It makes more sense to me cause then i can follow along the whole conversation.

I like that... having both types of forums is rather appealing.

I'm just confused. But I'm sure either way, I will figure it out. Maybe.

[beautiful.nightmareStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Hmm then if that happens there would need to be a quote button (I couldn't tell you if there already is one lol) and people would need to USE it! Lol. It would make more sense though because it would work like other forums.
But we really need an option to edit our posts!

i agree!
I'm on many different forums that are set up this way & i like it better.
the edit option is a MUST HAVE!

Can you make it so responses are indented (the way it is with the new 'comment reply' option)? I'd like to leave it the way it is, but since reponses aren't indented it's confusing for me to figure out who's replying to what and what is a new reply to the OP. Maybe you can collapse and expand a response thread so that only reponses to the OP are shown at first? I don't know, that sounds like it's complicated though
